Remembering the "Holler House on the Brazos"

Awesome piece, guys! I'm looking forward to more historical stuff like this before Kyle comes down. On that subject, the main photo of G. Rollie is an interesting perspective of pre-third deck Kyle Field. First view I've seen of it from that angle.

Nice tribute. I remember graduating in that place as well as going to basketball games and concerts. Lots of memories. Remember watching the Wall play. Saw Bob Hope. Saw Lionel Richie when he was with the Commodores. Walked across the stage and took my diploma from Frank Vandiver. Years later, went back inside GRW with my daughter and wife to pick up my daughter's Aggie ring.

Will miss the place. Saw my brother graduate in that place, saw the Harlem Globetrotters (Meadowlark, Curly Neal, etc.), Beach Boys, Jimmy Buffett, Commodores, Seala and Croft after the Bonfire when it snowed, and the list goes on and on. Was at the last game at GR when we beat Baylor. It's gonna be hard to go to the game Saturday and not see Jollie Rollie there.

I understand the need but this is impacting me more than any other building demolition at A&M. Walked across the stage twice & wife, brother & sister did too. Saw Jerry Reed, Steve Martin & other shows. Dad was '50 when GRW was new & talked like it was one of the wonders of the world. Like him, it's gone now.

I remember the bonfire when it snowed that time. Several inches of snow all over the ground but we were close enough that the heat frim the fire had melted the snow and we were standing in several inches of "warm" water. Really weird. And then as I remember, the centerpole snapped and the entire bonfire fell sideways, with flaming logs hurling through the air. I ran as fast as I could and ran into the side of a white pickup and dented the door in. Nobody was hurt. I remember back then thinking how close the whole thing came to being a front page newspaper event if people had been killed. Years later when the bonfire collapsed and 12 people lost their lives, this is the first thing I thought of.

What was our overall record at G. Rollie?

Great video.

Yes….once something (or someone) is gone, you begin to remember all the good things. G. Rollie White Coliseum, usually thought of as just a drab, almost ugly building, but watching that video and seeing it being torn down brings back many good memories. When I was in school, an “activities pass”, paid for at registration each semester, got the student into all sporting events, football, basketball, etc., including all other events at G. Rollie. For members of the Corp, the activities pass was required. (Compulsory fun.) So, we would take the short walk from the Corps dorm quad to G. Rollie during basketball season to watch, support and holler for Shelby Metcalf’s Aggie basketball team. Of course, we were in uniform, and since the activities pass was required for the uniformed students, nothing more was needed to be admitted past the ticket takers. Just a “howdy” and walked right in.
