Does anyone remember this guy? He was 6'4" and laid the "Smack" on those who ventured into his territory. It's time A&M went back to recruiting a Strong Safety like the HitMan in prep for the post Appel era.

One of my favorite players. I still remember as a kid watching the Cotton Bowl game against Notre Dame. Jerome Bettis comes to the goal line and is met with a huge hit from Bates. Neither gave an inch and they just went sideways. Bettis scored on the play and of course got up bobbing his head and talking crap but I was like "man you just met the first guy you couldn't run over and got the shiat knocked out of you!!" One of the best collisions I've ever seen.

Except that Appel is and has been the FS for some odd reason, even though he is a smallish LB .. oh well.

I remember that play as well. It was great. By the way, Bates did played FS for the Ags and for the Raiders. It just happen to be that he was 6'3 220. He was a really nice guy, but just fell into a bad lifestyle in LA.

Czar, the 1992 Official A&M Roster lists him as 6'4" / 225 lbs. That frick'n team rocked!

Oh yes, the highlight of our 28 - 3 ass whooping in the Cotton Bowl when Bowden was beggin Slocum that we play FSU instead of the rematch with Notre Dame.

My memory serves that Bettis punked Bates on that play. Inches were given and Bates was on the receiving end.

Well you memory sucks, I have the game on VHS and watched it again last week if you would like your memory jogged a little.

If you recall just after that play, Bettis went after Bates, wanting to fight him. It was obvious Bates had said something to him.

We later learned it was, "How did you like that, FAT BOY!"

Next to "The Hit"...this was one of my favorite tackles. I don't think Bettis has been hit that hard before or since.

I really miss Bates' attitude on the field.

I don't have a response to the ESPN news report purporting domestic battery allegations. But, I played free safety in high school from '90 to '93(just not very well) and I idolized Patrick Bates. When I made varsity I seized the #29 jersey before the dude that had it prior to me even had his locker cleaned out.

I have my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology now, but even to this day, if I play a college football video game I automatically select “create a player” and make two guys: Bucky Richardson with the knee high socks, and Bates with the tinted visor, full cage facemask, blue (Easton) receivers’ gloves and long shirt sleeves like they sported against FSU in the ’92 Cotton Bowl… it’s probably a little twisted, but oh well.

Dennis Allen and Rich Coady, were both top notch All-Conference free safeties with Pro success. Hendricks, Webster, and Jennings also played the position well. Jaxson Appel has been an old school, bring-the-wood-every-down stud sense he stepped foot on campus; just like Allen and Coady were. On the field Appel epitomizes everything good about being a Texas Aggie. But, boys, there may never again be another defensive backfield force like the “Bates Motel” on Kyle again.

I know Bates' family and that article left out alot of important information, but I will not comment any further.

Webster was a great CB. Kiel is the other big hitter at Safety. I was a fan of Dennis Allen at Safety also.

1. I also recall that Bettis definitely got the better of Bates on that hit.

2. Looks like that "FAT BOY," is headed for Canton. The insultee got cut after knocking his girlfriend around.

That being said, Bates was a heckuva college safety. You all haven't had anybody close to him since he left.

What about him? He was an AA and Lombardi winner who was the first overall pick in the NFL draft. Unfortunately, he had a problem with the white powder and greatly underachieved in the NFL. Bates set the standard for safeties at A&M and only a few have come close...Kiel for example.

Bates got his bell rung on that play as much if not more than Bettis. Sorta like when Tatum and Campbell met head on at the goal line and neither knew where they were. But since Bettis' score was the cherry on top of a thorough thrashing that day, I'm guessing he got up feeling a helluva lot better than what Bates did.
