Spring football must be taken with a large grain of salt. Last year I said I was very concerned about our defensive backfield and was promptly told not to worry about it, that Fran said it was the most improved aspect of our team. Well it was clearly the weakest link in our D last year.
Well yeah, when you're REALLY bad it's easy to improve the most. That doesn't mean it's all of a sudden a strength. Saying individual players in the defensive secondary were surprises is just coachspeak to me until they show it on the field. The surprise could be "I was expecting to bench this guy in favor of a true fish, but he's showing me he may be decent enough to hold on to his starting job". In the end that may not be saying much.
Or maybe it is. Time will tell. Regardless of how close we are to getting a dominant Wrecking Crew back, the defensive secondary is still our biggest hole, and that includes our lack of depth at LB.
