Remember that she did not get to play very much last season. As I remember she really only came in as a blocking specialist for Maddie W. I think she has a very high ceiling for us this year. Her height rerally helps on the blocks as well as her kill shots.

With Stowers in there I'm certain we sweep Louisville quite easily. We competed with and could've won against a top ten team who returned all but one of their contributors from last season, all without our leader and ncaa tournament mvp. I don't want to play moral victories because we could have won this. We are a very young team with little experience playing with each other. Fitch and Morris hardly saw the court last year, Musgrove much less. We had 4 transfers playing today and a freshman. At the last second they're told they're facing the number 7 team in the country without their leader and go to player. Yet they showed fight, could've won set 2 and 4 with leads in both of them. I'm walking out of this match with so much more confidence in this team than I had going into it.
Setting will improve, chemistry will improve, blocking will improve, serving will improve. We are only going to get better and look what we did to an experienced and loaded top ten team, without Kyndal Stowers.
We'll be perfectly okay, I have so much confidence in this team. It's August, this team will be terrifying to play in December. The rest of the ncaa did not like what they saw from us today… this isn't a rebuild. This is a final four team…

I'm not as high as you (no final four prediction for me) on this team until we see how they look with Stowers, but I broadly agree. The team fought well for being super young and having their best (or second best, Rodriguez is a god) player out injured in warmups and I think Morrison will have them rolling come December.
More to do with other squads, I don't think many improved over the offseason. Kentucky losing Hudson will be huge and their two pins can't pass. Nebraska will choke again because of serve receive. Pitt has better setting but no help for Babcock, tu didn't get better, and their setting situation isn't figured out and the indecision will be hurtful for them. SMU has no depth and just keeps replacing their entire roster year after year. Wisconsin is talented, they have Feurbringer, but new pieces all around, I'm most afraid of them. Louisville will get better, but we'd sweep them with Stowers or easily win in 4. Stanford will be good, but not final four worthy. I like Purdue and Creighton as well, but not final four worthy.
We have lots of questions too, but what we saw today, what we know Stowers will bring, how we know this staff can help a team play its best volleyball when it matters most and continue to improve throughout the season, I like the chances. Not saying it's a guarantee, but it's a possibility and I feel more confident about it after this match than I did before.

My ramblings…
- we improved every set after the initial shock of no Stowers. Even though Louisville pulled away in the last set late it was a lot to do with them stepping up their game.
- we win at minimum set 2 with a "typical" Ring performance. She was off today - happens
- is NCAA going to camera system soon? (No line judges). It was impressive to watch this in the pros, really sped up calls and improved accuracy. I was pleasantly surprised this was in place today.

I too am coming away from this game with a lot of hope and I'm a pessimist.
The pieces are there to compete at a very high level and we were missing our biggest piece.
here are some of my notes for Coach to work on.
- Service pressure has to get stronger.
- Tip / roll-shot coverage needs to get stronger. If I had to criticize any of Morrison's teams is that lack of anticipation and hustle on tip coverage. How many setter dumps did Louisville get on us. The thing is, defensive talent is there but they don't seem to show up until late in the season in big games. Some of it tonight was some hesitation between two players. In the future, just let Gabi get it.
- Middle blocking is way way slow right now. Giant holes between the two blockers and a player like Chicoine will feast on that.

When SEC went to Hawkeye replay, Jamie mentioned that SEC foot the bill to install at all SEC schools. B1G didn't go to Hawkeye because the smaller programs didn't want to pay for it and the conference didn't pay for it. I found it frustrating last season when we have to play at schools that didn't have it (Nebraska).
Jamie has been pushing for the system they used tonight for a couple years. I'd guess we might see SEC and possibly B1G move to this system first, but i'm guessing it will be a while before everyone does. It was pretty cool to see on the broadcast.

Lighten up Francis. What did I say that was inaccurate. I didn't expect perfection.
She had 4 service errors and two critical back to back hitting errors. She'll get better, as will Ring who hit sub 100.
There's a lot lot like about tonight but growth starts with acknowledging the shortcomings and correcting them.

"Gabi" is a rock star. In my effusive praise of our new Libero, I misspelled her name. My mistake.
Regardless of how you type her name, she's going to be fun to watch and her health and contribution is a critical piece of our future growth and success.
I don't want another loss, but I don't want Kyndal risking anything in August in the second match of the year!! She's too important to this team and we need her in conference play and in December!!aginlakeway said:

Your last point is spot on. We will miss Cos and Perkins big time. Castle and Sharp are good but we are foolish to ignore the loss with the best middle blocking tandem in the country last year.
Still. Lots of positives to take away so far. But Stowers must get healthy.
Some really great points from everyone. I was also frustrated with the lack of preparation for the tip and sometimes we got caught watching the game instead of playing game. I saw the Baylor highlights and thought our serves looked tough, last night the serves looked soft. I'm not sure why the difference between the two matches. Sets need to be faster and higher, it seemed like we had a lot of low sets. Blocking also has to get faster and more coordinated between the blockers. The great thing is this should improve the more the ladies play together.
I am also someone who is very excited to see how this team progresses and am looking forward to an awesome season!

Morning Ags! I won't spell Gabi's name wrong again. Don't kick me off the island yet! Thanks for all the honest constructive insights into the match last night. We were there and watching it unfold. Yet so new that we (wife and I) couldn't figure out what we were doing wrong. It seemed our sets to hitters lacked the variety the cards had. The stats were telling to us. Kill percentage, number of digs, etc.
We need to improve our passing. Too often we pull the setter towards the back row which limits set options. At least that's what I observed.
Wisconsin pouring aces on Louisville forcing them and Cabello so far out of system, something we couldn't do with our serve

it wasn't bad but when compared to Louisville, there was a significant difference. Felt like their setter didn't have to move all night.
I'm just a casual, but the first thing I noticed was the setting definitely felt different to last year. Lots of timing problems.
Ring seems to have a cannon and is good enough to swing full power off some really high and ugly passes with hit or miss accuracy. A little more control would improve her numbers a lot.
Gabi looked like she belonged out there, I like her.
The middles seemed to tip 50/50 balls back to the middle of the court instead of straight down like last year. It felt like there were a lot of easy points that Ifenna would have just sent straight to the floor.
The slight offensive lulls seem like they would have been filled if Stowers was in to keep some momentum.
Otherwise to be that close to a team that we barely beat last year with all the problems we had and clear unfulfilled potential, it seems like we have a pretty high ceiling this year.
