Top ten match in Reed Arena. The first ever top ten volleyball matchup in Reed Arena. The #9 Texas A&M Aggies will host the number #3 Kentucky Wildcats 6pm Wednesday evening. Two of the 4 remains undefeated teams in the SEC. If you can get to Reed Arena Wednesday, get there!!
Kentucky rolls in with 3 top ten wins and 4 straight sweeps of their opponents. They have wins over: Penn State, SMU, Louisville, with losses to Pitt and Nebraska. In conference play they've played and swept South Carolina, Georgia, and Ole Miss with the opponents passing 20 points in 2 of those 9 sets.
Kentucky was strong last year. They ended the season winning 14 in a row before falling in the elite 8. They brought back one of the best outside hitters in Brooklyn DeLeye, a strong libero in Molly Tuozzo, and a strong. Middle blocker in Brooke Bultema. They then added two all big ten and all American players from Purdue, Eva Hudson and Lizzie Carr. Hudson joins DeLete as arguably the best outside hitting duo in the country and Carr at 6'6 joins Bultema to form one of the best middle duos in the country, but she can also play on the right side. They love that slide attack. Their biggest question mark was who would fill in at setter. That's where they have turned to true freshman Kassie O'Brien. Who also stands at 6'1 and can provide a strong block. Kentucky runs a fast offense and O'Brien has settled in. She has lots of weapons to work with.
Kentucky has tremendous size and will impose their size tremendously on defense forcing team to hesitate or send a lot of tips. Kentucky will serve hard, but they don't really have a lot of aces, at only about 1.34 per set. However, they are excellent in serve receive. They love to play fast and it's a given where the ball will be going most of the time Hudson and DeLeye nearly each average 11 swings per set, hitting .278 and .301 respectively along with 4.20 and 4.51 kills per set.
For us what will be most important is quick decisions and getting to the block as fast as possible. We need. To provide a huge block to slow down their hitters. For us to win, Ifenna Cos-Okaplla and Morgan Perkins will need to be playing their best defense along with Waak and our other pins at the net. Like I mentioned for them defensively they have size. We'll need to distribute the ball extremely well and keep their defense hesitant. A great match for us would be at least 4 girls getting 3 kills a set. I hope we can continue to serve hard and keep. Them out of system.
With two heavyweight teams with many All-Americans on the court it's going to be an epic battle. While the best overall team may win, it can also potentially come down to whose stars rise to the occasion. For us, can Lednicky swing her way to lead us to victory. We haven't really relied on her to take a huge amount of swings, could this be the match. Can back to back SEC defensive player of the week. Cos-Okpalla prove that she should be first team all-American and take over this match with an imposing block, aggressive serve, and powerful swing. Will Morgan Perkins, Emily Hellmuth or Kyndal Stowers step up and prove themselves on a huge stage. Or will Kentucky's All-Americans overwhelm us.
Regardless, great, not just good, volleyball will be played at Reed Arena. Year 3 into the Jamie Morrison era and we have a single digit next to our name and we are playing in matches that have conference championship implications. Get to Reed, be loud, have some faith, and let's go show the SEC and the country what Texas A&M Volleyball is all about! BTHO kentucky!!!
