Kid Doc....can I get novavax if I have already had moderna x3?

Thanks for all your help.
Yeah you can. I have Moderna x2 and had my first natural infection 2 weeks ago so plan to consider Novavax in 3-4 months or so.

Thanks for your response!

I called HEB in Waco and the pharmacist told.me they can not give me Novavax if I have already had moderna. They said it is not approved for that.

Not sure what to think.

Technically he is correct.

USE WITH OTHER VACCINES There is no information on co-administration of the Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine, Adjuvanted with other vaccines.

That just means it hasn't been studied specifically yet. Medically I think it is perfectly safe if >6 months since last mRNA vaccine. That is just my opinion based on > 20 years of front line medical practice and extensive vaccine use, not proven fact.

KidDoc - now that Moderna and Pfizer have released their new "bivalent" boosters, do you still prefer Novavax or would you consider the new ones?

I dunno yet. Not enough data to make a decision. For me it will depend on longevity of immunity.

Shouldn't safety be a factor in there somewhere…?

The safety of both looks excellent. I still don't understand the hand wringing about "long term" side effects. No vaccine has ever had long term late side effects, they all occur within the first few weeks.

So no, I have no safety concerns for these vaccines. I do have safety concerns for the young male population but I have never recommended any COVID vaccines for young healthy people who have an extremely low risk of severe COVID with or without vaccines.

My wife and I finally got the jab yesterday. We got the Novavax one since it is a protein subunit vaccine. We have both had COVID twice (most recently at the beginning of July), so we know we didn't need the jab, but my wife's son and daughter-in-law are having a baby in December, and we have been informed that we cannot see the baby until we are vaccinated. You can't reason with emotional parents, and I want my wife to have a relationship with her son and grandson. I am just glad the Novavax shot is out so we could get that one. We absolutely would have refused the others, grandson be damned.

I hope she is making sure contacts are getting pertussis and flu because those are actually dangerous to infants as opposed to COVID which is pretty benign.

She isn't - yet. Although my wife had a tetanus shot about 2 years ago that had diphtheria and pertussis in it.

Saw my wife's retina specialist yesterday. They always ask if you have been vaccinated against COVID. We said yes. They asked which shot. I said, "Novavax". The girl looked confused and asked, "Not Pfizer or Moderna?" She had never heard of Novavax.

More good news about Novavax!

https://www.cnn.com/2022/10/19/health/novavax-covid-booster-fda-eua/index.html

Quote:

The company presented data last week at the World Vaccine Congress showing that when its vaccine is used is a booster, it elicits a wide range of antibodies against many Omicron subvariants, including BA.1, BA.2 and BA.5.
Dubovsky said the company believes that its vaccine generates a broad antibody response because of the type of technology it uses. He says the company has not seen any data that suggests that it needs to update the vaccine to include more current strains like BA.4 and BA.5.
"All the data right now points to us that our current vaccine, the one that's been used, when it has a very extensive safety database, seems to work just fine against the variants that are circulating right now," he said.
In the clinical trials, side effects were mild and lasted about two days. The most common side effects reported with the Novavax booster were pain or tenderness at the injection site, fatigue, muscle pain and headache.

But where is it available?

Also, I see that myocarditis is a risk with it also. Is that risk as severe as with the other vaccines?

Another data point. It appears that the novavax vaccine is not available as a booster to the other vaccines.

Myocarditis risk appears to be about the same as with the mrna vaccines, mostly in young men.

I found it at my local Costco through the vaccines.gov website.

Thanks. Do you prefer it over the MRNA vaccines as a booster to them? If so, why is that?

ETA: After seeing your most recent posts, I did a bit more research. It looks like the Novavax vaccine has been approved as primary shots and as a first booster, but I've not found anything stating that it's approved as a second or third booster. Are you aware of any info on that issue?

Not enough data yet but it shouldn't matter immunologicaly if it is first or 4th booster really. It seems to hold up better vs variants and last longer.

My wife and I got our 2nd Novavax shot on Friday at the College Station Costco. Neither of us had much of a reaction. We both had slight pain at the injection site, and I had a little minor joint pain the next day. After that, nothing.

We're glad that this was available because if the only vaccines that had been available were the MRNA or J&J, we would not be seeing our grandson when he's born in December, thanks to our ignorant daughter-in-law.

Had my Novavax as a booster yesterday at lunch at Costco. Painless injection and only side effect so far is mild muscle soreness. I had Moderna way back in 12/2020 and 1/2021 and had pretty severe fever and chills after the 2nd dose.

Good info and I'm strongly considering that option as well.

Why do you like the Novavax vaccine over the Pfizer/Moderna bivalent boosters?

ETA: My local Costco in Arkansas just informed me that they are not allowed to administer the Novavax vaccine as a booster to the MRNA vaccines per Costco policy. Frustrating. The pharmacist did agree, however, to check with someone higher up in the food chain to see if that policy had or was about to change.

See my post from 10/20/2022 above about why I prefer Novavax. Because the data supports it.

Here is one of many news articles about it being authorized as a booster, was about 2 weeks ago.

And, I presume, the data does not support the effectiveness of the MRNA bivalent boosters? I've seen a couple of articles to that effect and was wondering if that's the basis of your preference.

mRNA vaccines do very poorly if the R Spike protein mutates, which it has frequently already. Novavax seems to hold up efficacy even with omicron. Thus the need for reformulation of the mRNA vaccines. In addition the neutralizing antibody titers drop rapidly after 2-3 months with the mRNA vaccines so they drop efficacy pretty quickly and don't seem to do well inducing immunogical memory unlike traditional vaccine technology. The data which the FDA reviewed to EUA the reformulated mRNA vaccines was only based on a titer boost. There is no outcome based data at this time as far as comparing death/hospitalization/infection rates.

Here's the problem I'm running into - CDC only allows the Novavax as a booster to the MRNA vaccines only if you have not gotten any other booster dose.

Quote:

Novavax booster: You may get a monovalent Novavax booster if you are unable or unwilling to receive a Pfizer or Moderna updated (bivalent) COVID-19 booster and you meet the following requirements:
  • You are 18 years of age or older
  • You completed a COVID-19 vaccine primary series at least 6 months ago
  • You have not gotten any other booster dose
