Has Omicron changed the definition of an "exposure"?

If so, what is it? The old one (more or less) was being less than 6 feet from an infected person for 10-15 minutes with poor air circulation.

It's the Winter of Death buddy.

Looking at someone through a window is a death sentence.

The definition was arbitrarily decided. In the UK, it also included being within 3 ft of someone for one minute.

Arbitrary definition is still arbitrary.

6 feet, 3 feet - 15 minutes, 5 minutes.

Some entities tried to define a standard "exposure" when they were doing contact tracing. Since that's gone by the wayside, so has the definition of "exposure".

Everything about our reaction to this pandemic from a public health standpoint could rightly be referred to as arbitrary. "Follow the Science" has become a punchline now in a joke.

Let me go notify one so that they can drop what they're doing to respond to a random guy on Texags.

Ooooooooooooooo! Burn! We have dozens of doctors and other COVID experts on this forum who seem to have had time for years to answer such questions, so go away.

One is exposed to the virus when their body encounters the virus. Whether or not that is sufficient to cause infection is dependent on some combination of the viral load transmitted to the person and the receiving person's immune system. The viral load transmitted can be through smaller amounts over an extended period of time, larger amounts over a shorter period of time, varying amounts based on distance, or any other number of possibilities including how much viral load the person is putting out, how much air circulation the area has, etc. There are too many inputs to have one singular definition of an "exposure".

A reasonable answer. Obviously there is a difference between having a COVID positive person sneeze in your face vs walking by them in Walmart. I simply wish there were better guidelines in order to stop people from freaking out about exposing themselves (or not).

Lol, you started a topic last night, then two hours later, said "why no answers from doctors?" I'm well aware that doctors have posted on here, but you apparently were stunned and somewhat offended that none of them got on here within two hours on a Friday night to respond to your question.

There is no preventing freakout. Doesn't matter if you get a doc to respond, the level of people's freakout is totally decoupled from rational thought.

Just attended a meeting with a bunch of teachers to plan for an in person event at a school. "everyone super concerned mixing kids from different schools, have to be super careful, masks all day,"

So colored by where one is from. Uh, no, no one is freaking out in my district. Nope. Down the road, though, they are still at defcon 1.

I am not aware of how a "significant exposure" to Omicron is defined.

What is clear is that omicron is much more highly infectious than Delta and other strains

If you want to be protected from Omicron infection, the only mask worth wearing is an N95 mask that is tight fitting around your nose and mouth.

The reason why masking is not universally effective is that the masks people use are usually inadequate, poorly fitting, and not worn properly

I wish i had a nickel for every person i have seen wearing a mask below their nose. These people might as well be wearing their underwear on their heads, as they are not protected to any degree by wearing a mask that way.

Loose fitting masks enable viral particles to be inhaled through the edges of the mask.

If you dont want to get omicron, find an N95 mask that fits your face tightly (dont get them with straps that go around the ears, because those are worthless also). The straps need to go around your head. Then wear the n95 everywhere you go, and dont touch the filtering portion of the mask with your fingers.

My son is an anesthesiologist, working with the airways of many patients per day, and has intubated a lot of patients with severe COVID. Wears a tight fitting n95 and still after two years hasn't gotten COVID.

The masking debate could be very quickly ended with a properly conducted trial where the test group wore N95s religiously and had properly fitting masks. The control group could wear any other mask they wanted any way they wanted. I will bet the farm that n95 wearers would demonstrate the efficacy of proper masking.

Thank you.

Your response mean, effectively, masks for the general public are, and always will be, ineffective.

What bugs me is people falling back on "well it's better than nothing". No it isn't. It implies a sense of security that is non-existent and thus is detrimental.

Wanna be as safe as possible? Wear an N-95 correctly. But you thinking you're protected by me wearing a piece of cloth over my face is misleading. You should be fully aware YOU are responsible for protecting yourself from ME, because I will never adequately protect you from me.

I could be wrong, but I don't think there is any significant percentage of people arguing that a properly fitting N95 mask doesn't work.

This question arose from my nephew having a positive test on Thursday after us being around him on Saturday. Sister was terrified that we'd all get COVID because we hugged him……and worked outside in the sun and wind…..and ate lunch out on the deck with him in the sunshine and wind, really never within 5 feet of him except the hug. She was convinced that OMICRON was that contagious.

The masking debate has been ended. Mask mandates don't work, and it's not remotely reasonable to think the general public is going to religiously wear properly fitting n95 masks all the time.

Agree. Sure, if the public did it right, it would work. To expect that boarders on insanity though. And honestly given how much less severe omicron is, why mask?
