How long do you want to ignore this user?
Going on a fishing trip Friday-Tuesday in Mexico.

One of my buddies going on the trip had symptoms start last Friday (the 21st, and tested positive on a rapid test same day). Symptoms have been gone for him since yesterday morning.

1. What are the chances he is going to be contagious during the trip
2. What are the chances he still tests positive on his return mandatory test for travel

He is 31, Completely vaxxed, though a cancer survivor (Been cleared for over 4 years, port removed a couple years ago).

The advice my hospital gives is that you can test positive for 90 days afterwards. Not sure how accurate that really is but that is the official word. If the friend was asymptomatic, I wouldn't stress about him being contagious.

My advice would be to do multiple nasal rinses a day to decrease the viral load and hopefully test negative before he goes.

My experience and multiple observed experiences of friends with this Omi version is that no one that had symptoms and subsequently had symptoms go away infected anyone else after reaching the symptom free state plus 24 hours. Ironically that is the way viruses have always behaved.

But truly having symptoms and then being truly symptom free for 24 hours would be important to me. None of the I think I might have had it or all I have left is a little congestion or a cough. I would only trust that if it had been closer to 10 days from symptom onset.

And just because you can still test positive does not necessarily mean you are still infectious.

If he tests positive in Mexico, fly to the Mexico side of the border. Cross the port of entry bridge on foot. Fly from US side home.

I do not think they require negative tests for domestic flights.

Yeah you can pop positive for quite some time.

If it was a week before your trip he should no longer be contagious if he does not have symptoms any longer.

For him, I would test before I get on plane, so he can make sure he won't still be positive when he is down there and cannot get home.

He is quite likely to continue to test positive. If he can show proof of a recent infection that should replace a negative test.

A hundred peso handshake and he will have a negative test to return. Don't sweat it…unless you spend your last 100 pesos on something else..
