LONDON Horrific scenes seen in previous Covid-19 waves are "now history," according to John Bell, a regius professor of medicine at the University of Oxford and the U.K. government's life sciences advisor.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4 on Tuesday, Bell analyzed data from the U.K., where cases are breaking records and hospital admissions are at their highest since March. He said that the number of people in ICUs who are vaccinated remains "very, very low."
"The incidence of severe disease and death from this disease [Covid] has basically not changed since we all got vaccinated and that's really important to remember," he told the BBC.
"The horrific scenes that we saw a year ago intensive care units being full, lots of people dying prematurely that is now history in my view and I think we should be reassured that that's likely to continue."
Discussing the new omicron variant, he added: "The disease does appear to be less severe, and many people spend a relatively short time in hospital. They don't need high-flow oxygen, average length of stay is apparently three days, this is not the same disease as we were seeing a year ago."
A U.K. government study published Thursday said that people are far less likely to be admitted to the hospital with the Covid omicron variant than with the previous delta strain.
The U.K. Health Security Agency said individuals with omicron are estimated to be between 31% and 45% less likely to attend emergency departments compared with those with delta, and 50% to 70% less likely to require admission to a hospital.
The analysis is "preliminary and highly uncertain" owing to the small numbers of omicron cases currently in hospitals, but it does tally with similar findings from scientists in South Africa and research teams at Imperial College London and the University of Edinburgh.

What we don't know, is whether getting omicron gives you immunity from delta. Or alpha.
If it does we should be in good shape soon, if not then this is just an interlude in a larger story.

Preliminary studies say it might though.

The vast majority of current reports are that it displaces Delta and grants immunity. That is what many experts expected to happen a month ago and it currently appears to be holding true which is great news.

So we should be doing the opposite of locking down. I'd say masking up too, but it's clear now that they don't do jack squat.

Can people check themselves in for "hospitalization"? They're talking about the sharp increase in Hospitalizations here, but all the evidence says the numbers should be minimal. Are people just working themselves into a frenzy again? The lines here to get a test are about a mile long, with waits 4+ hours. On the news, they asked people "Why are you getting tested" and many just said something like "I want to know if I'm going to be OK".

Strange answer, and the people they asked didn't seem to be sick. 28% testing positive, which means 3 out of 4 are not sick or have it, but in line anyway.

why are people absolutely losing their minds over this...? Drove past a pop-up testing site today and cars circled two city blocks TWICE to get tested. What in the world is going on? If anything, I'd want to get Omicron so I can benefit from this potential immunity it provides.

Report on the radio said ERs are being overwhelmed (sorry, can't remember where) by people testing positive. That is it. Positive test and people are rushing to the ER with no symptoms. Crazy.

If you get covid, it might be worthwhile knowing whether or not you have it even if it is mild so that you know to avoid other people for a week or two.

You mean 5 days (as of this week).

Once the pfizer pill is widely available that will be a valid reason as well.

Yeah I mean there's a lot that I don't agree with and a lot of people over-reacting, but this "why would you get tested? why does it matter?" idea is pretty silly. People have work requirements, people are going to be around the elderly, etc...

Is there a decent chance we'll all be exposed to Omicron? Yes.

Is there a decent chance that with the data that we've seen that Omicron should be less severe? Yes.

Does that somehow mean we want to rush out and get everyone infected with Omicron as quickly as we can? No. That's absolutely wreckless.

So do we have enough data to compare omicron and the flu yet? Surely more transmissive but perhaps the same or less severity per average case?

My point being is we don't rearrange our collective lives around the flu. Perhaps we're at that point with this strain of COVID?

From my limited experience in kids this COVID is a very mild URI and flu is much more severe. Flu seems to be less transmissable.

I'm sure I'll get more COVID/Omi experience over the next two months if I want to or not!

Do you think that adults who are experiencing more severe symptoms have a different variant? My 54yo BIL is laid out right now. He's overweight, vaccinated (not boosted), has ongoing upper respiratory issues, and more that I probably don't know. His doctor told him there is no point in getting the antibodies because they don't work on the current variant. Should he push for them if this is likely a previous variant? My sister is asking me for advice.

Yes I would push for monoclonals. Minimal risk and possible benefit. Especially with the CDC omicron numbers changing by massive amounts day to day.

Quit spewing the BS

Example: College son in Houston didn't come home for Christmas because his girlfriend tested positive (fever, aches, sore throat, cough were reason for testing) the Saturday before. His work didn't let him come in that week due to exposure, but said he could return on Day 5 with a negative test. Waited in line for test on day 5- he had a headache and chills on day 3, but nothing before or after- test was positive for Covid, so then he had to wait to return to work. Work protocols haven't caught up with CDC protocols yet. He's a fifth-year senior, so is paying for most of his living expenses and needed those hours.

Another example: Niece was exposed by a friend's family. She planned to visit her grandparents for a few days, had some sniffles, you know... the cold that everyone keeps saying this is. She waited in line to test so that she doesn't unknowingly expose the 85-year-olds to the "cold that could kill them." Thankfully negative

BIL works from home. He and his wife are overweight, vaxxed, etc. Their kids stayed with them for a few days over Christmas. Two days later, his son gets sick in OK. Concerned for his father, he stands in line to get tested, not to have an excuse to stay in from work. His dad gets sick the next day and immediately got tested so that he could start any available protocols. He might have delayed testing if his son hadn't already done it. Neither of them is avoiding work. They're trying to avoid the dad's funeral.

But you continue living in your delusional "everyone else must be an ass" world.

I've been exposed to covid in the last week and have been isolating for the last couple of days. I'm tempted to go get tested so that I can get out and do more work. Being stuck inside and away from others is rather limited to getting things done.

In the last week, I've been exposed to someone who has tested positive for covid. Also, daily to someone who is sick and was also exposed to the same person who tested positive for covid, but has not been tested.

Considering that when I had covid, it was quite mild and that the severity seems pretty low for us who have been vaccinated, I'm not worried about myself. I do need to do a bunch of work outside today and tomorrow (going to be really cold tomorrow) and also I need to be able to go talk to others including one couple that is in their late 70s or their 80s.

People without kids just don't get it. This has an Ro of 10, basically the same as mumps, measles, and chicken pox. For measles, 90+% vax rates are needed to prevent community spread. Not only are we well below that for COVID, but the COVID vaccines don't prevent spread. This prevention nonsense is a fool's errand at this point.

What a load of rubbish!

The two I need to talk to most are elderly and high risk. Do you really think I should take a chance with passing covid to them?

For what it's worth, the doctor's office is closed today. I haven't ruled out a covid test today, though.

By the way, of my three family members who are sick this week after our Christmas Eve Dinner, the one who is the most ill, by far, is the youngest of the three, had a bad case of covid last year and spent several days in the hospital on oxygen as a result, and has not been vaccinated. The other two have been vaccinated and seem to be much better now.

Delta was estimated around 5.1, with studies ranging between 3 and 8. The original strain was between 2 and 3. Omicron is likely around 10. This of course depends on human behavior, but whether it is 8 or 17, the vaccine efficacy and vaccination rates mean that spread cannot be stopped.

Is long covid only associated with severe covid infection or can it occur from any level of infection?
If only severe, that would be further good news with the weaker omicron strain taking over.

EDIT: This study says long covid occurs across the spectrum of infection, although weighted towards the severe end of severity. Despite my age, dying from covid doesn't worry me as I am in good health, on weight and have no comorbidities, but the potential for being miserable for years because of long covid is a primary motivator for getting myself vaxxed and increasing the probability of mild infection.

"The prevalence of residual symptoms is about 35% in patients treated for COVID-19 on outpatient basis, but around 87% among cohorts of hospitalized patients."

My 61 year old dad passed away yesterday from COVID. He was vaccinated and boostered. He was the 1st "breakthrough" death at Cy Fair Hospital. He did have underlying heath conditions, his kidneys were losing function and were only 25% effective. He was about to start dialysis. He had plenty of more time left and had a plan to continue on. COVID came and ravaged his organs, he was admitted to the ER on New Years Eve, placed in an induced coma and put on a ventilator new years day, He passed 2 days later. I don't wish this on anyone.
