This is weird. No official announcement. Just some offhand comment by Johnson. No info on patient (age, vaccination status, comorbidities). He also said "with Omicron" not "from" Omicron. Fishy.

I saw this to. They definitely used "with"....i may be wrong here but my guess is someone who had cancer, heart problems, etc that happened to also get tested and ended up having Omicron....

Shame on Boris for spewing that garbage without details....

If it spreads 10x better but is 5x less severe than delta, you'd still expect twice the number of deaths. If it's twice as contagious and a tenth as deadly you'd expect 5 fold less deaths, which would still be hundreds a day in the US at current trends.

I don't think the new variant is worth freaking out over, but some people are certainly going to die from it.

Agree. Some will die.

I think you have to consider total obtained immunity....natural and vaccinated and combo + more mild disease = significantly fewer deaths than delta and probably alpha too.

My biggest issue is reporting a death as fear porn without explaining the individual's situation in more detail....

I just don't understand all this. Faucci and other's should be on tv celebrating the lack of severity! This is exciting but there still seems to be serious concern about this variant???

I just saw on CNBC that 40% of UK cases are Omicron. And they have about 50,000 cases a day!! 1 death!!! That is great news. I'm unvaccinated and would love to catch the Omicron (after Christmas though).

Also, isn't it strange we get no info on the deceased? I'm guessing they were 92 years old. Take the masks off our kids now!!!!

Maybe the patient's last name was actually Omicron?

Two weeks ago all of a sudden every country and health organization was freaking about omicron, even though it had been in the wild for months.

Of course we have moved on to the part of the script where someone dies of omicron, can't ratchet up lockdowns, booster mandates, and build back better without a crisis involving a new strain.

The real danger from omicron is probably in the increased chance that someone could be infected with two variants at the same time and create a new reassortment of the covid virus.

Keep catching myself....too political...but ultimately Omicron appears to be a net positive vs Delta so lets treat it as such...

i see the fear mongering on twitter....and i get its more contagious + less severe can still = more deaths....but that is assuming NO PREVIOUS IMMUNITY....the vaccines either work or they do not...tired of the booster garbage....also confused by the "we know the long term effects" but "we have no clue of the short term efficacy"...wouldn't mind clarification there....

Yeah, he died "with" Omicron. The comorbidity was a car crash.

That danger is never going to go away. There will be successive variants. Going to live my life with appropriate cautions where necessary (elderly, immuno compromised, etc.)

That's the way to do it. Don't worry about it happening, but just be aware that it could happen at some time in the future.

I don't have a study. Just sharing where he probably got it. If that is the source, it's a fake news play for money, obviously.

Not hogwash at all.

Our knowledge about RNA viruses and reasssortment goes back for many years. I first heard about it while watching a recorded medical seminar in the mid 1980s. I was intrigued by the process and tend to read reports about the subject.

It is best known with influenza viruses. Look at the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. I understand that it has also been shown to happen with other viruses.

I have been hoping that it would not happen with coronaviruses, but there are reports that it can happen.

There's no need to panic about it, though. Even if it can happen with coronaviruses, it should be quite rare. It could possibly happen today or it might not happen in our lifetime.

Even though it should be relatively unusual, it is something that we should be aware of so that if it does happen, we might be more ready to react to it.

One more time.......the bolded statement is hogwash.....you have zero proof and haven't provided a study of omicron or the Covid-19 virus that supports your statement......

A deltacron variant was identified about a month ago in Europe that is a combination of the omicron and delta variants. If not the result of contamination of test samples, are there any other possibilities (other than magic) that this could be done without reassortment?

The real hogwash is the claims that it can't happen.,
