Moving to South Africa is suddenly starting to sound promising.RockOn said:

Isn't that the typical pattern for mutations - more transmissible, less serious health risk?

If Covid-19 follows the path almost every other novel virus has ever evolved - eventually a variant will emerge that is far less deadly and more transmissible. This helps the virus do what it wants to do - spread. (Dead hosts can't spread a virus)
Then the new virus strain becomes dominant and endemic, and ultimately so lame we just lump it into family of viruses known as "the common cold"
I can't believe some people really believe this BS. Both this variant and Delta emerged from Southern Africa and India respectively, two regions with extremely low vaccination rates. But sure let's blame vaccination on emerging variants.WoMD said:FrioAg 00 said:

That's what would've normally happened.
But now, hosts that otherwise would die, but don't because they have less severe symptoms due to a leaky vaccine, can easily (potentially/maybe) select for that more dangerous variant that wouldn't naturally survive otherwise. Man-made natural selection, which is in essence an unnatural selection. We're taking a man made virus and making it into a more dangerous man-made version of what wouldn't exist without our sloppy interference.
But you'll never hear this from the media or so called "experts." All new and more dangerous variants will always be due to the evil unvaccinated. Using this very realistic logic, though, it is more likely that the vaccinated are responsible for any worsening variants than the unvaccinated. It's time for people to get their heads out of their arrogant asses and see what may be happening, instead of 100% blaming everyone who dares to choose for themselves.
Of course, once the vaccinated create these worse versions of covid, the only way for the unvaccinated to survive will be to become vaccinated themselves. Perhaps that's already known by the experts, which is why there's such a push to force it upon us. They know what they're creating.

Okay, my post got removed because I took issue with this comment. It appears that WoMD thinks that if Covid had been allowed to kill more people, we would not see dangerous variants evolve.Quote:

Are any vaccines 100% effective?94chem said:Okay, my post got removed because I took issue with this comment. It appears that WoMD thinks that if Covid had been allowed to kill more people, we would not see dangerous variants evolve.Quote:

Further, if that is true, and if the Covid vaccines are leaky, then we should stop giving flu vaccines as well, because they are even more leaky.
Logically, therefore, any vaccine that is not completely effective should not be deployed, because it is better to thin the herd of humanity by natural selection.
What have I missed here?

JOHANNESBURG, Nov 28 (Reuters) - A South African doctor who was one of the first to suspect a different coronavirus strain among patients said on Sunday that symptoms of the Omicron variant were so far mild and could be treated at home.
Dr. Angelique Coetzee, a private practitioner and chair of South African Medical Association, told Reuters that on Nov. 18 she noticed seven patients at her clinic who had symptoms different from the dominant Delta variant, albeit "very mild".
"Symptoms at that stage was very much related to normal viral infection. And because we haven't seen COVID-19 for the past eight to 10 weeks, we decided to test," she said, adding that the patient and his family turned out to be positive.
On the same day, more patients came in with similar symptoms, which was when she realised there was "something else going on." Since then, she's seen two to three patients a day.
"We have seen a lot of Delta patients during the third wave. And this doesn't fit in the clinical picture," she said, adding she alerted NICD on the same day with the clinical results.
"Most of them are seeing very, very mild symptoms and none of them so far have admitted patients to surgeries. We have been able to treat these patients conservatively at home," she said.
Coetzee, who is also on the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Vaccines, said unlike the Delta so far patients have not reported loss of smell or taste and there has been no major drop in oxygen levels with the new variant.
Her experience so far has been that the variant is affecting people who are 40 or younger. Almost half of the patients with Omicron symptoms that she treated were not vaccinated.
"The most predominant clinical complaint is severe fatigue for one or two days. With them, the headache and the body aches and pain."
I doubt it, although some diseases have been completely eradicated (smallpox, and I think it would be possible for polio and rabies).Jabin said:Are any vaccines 100% effective?94chem said:Okay, my post got removed because I took issue with this comment. Yes - goofy. Except this theory is based on a study before big brother became the gatekeeper on science.

Not saying it won't eventually be true but everything I have read is we do not even know if this is the case.
It was first identified there and it has been attributed to their advanced infectious disease infrastructure.
The variant is already now known to be in New Zealand, England, Brazil and other places.
Maybe just maybe it went unnoticed in other regions due to the lighter symptoms.
Again, not saying it won't end up being proven as starting there but to call it a fact that it did start there means you know more than anyone in the world.
It's pretty clear that SA is being punished for being communicative with the international community. The only logical response next time will be to remain silent. Sad.Quote:
BRUSSELS The omicron variant was already in the Netherlands when South Africa alerted the World Health Organization about it last week, Dutch health authorities said Tuesday, adding to fear and confusion over the new version of the coronavirus in a weary world hoping it had left the worst of the pandemic behind.
The Netherlands' RIVM health institute found omicron in samples dating from Nov. 19 and 23. The WHO said South Africa first reported the the variant to the U.N. healthy agency on Nov. 24.
