Good news for Texas (Google Covid Dashboard)

The last month has brought some good news on the Covid front for our state. A month ago the 7 day average was just over 15,000 cases. That is now down to 5,363. (Source: NYT through the google covid dashboard)
- We're through the worst of the Delta variant it appears
- We've worked our way through whatever spike was tied to school opening up
- And the full stadiums had no impact on cases in this state

Who knows if we'll have additional spikes, but we're definitely well over the worst of the last one.

I agree. But I bet we'll see another spike this winter. This winter it will probably be worse in states other than Texas, but it is coming. Just look at UK COVID cases. The best way to limit the numbers of cases, hospitalizations and deaths is vaccination.

After this winter, I think there will be enough herd immunity to COVID that the systemic risk will be gone everywhere. Just my prediction. But this winter will still be difficult as I bet we have a pretty rough flu season to go with a bad COVID winter - albeit not as bad as last winter.

I agree. But I bet we'll see another spike this winter. This winter it will probably be worse in states other than Texas, but it is coming. Just look at UK COVID cases. The best way to limit the numbers of cases, hospitalizations and deaths is vaccination.

After this winter, I think there will be enough herd immunity to COVID that the systemic risk will be gone everywhere. Just my prediction. But this winter will still be difficult as I bet we have a pretty rough flu season to go with a bad COVID winter - albeit not as bad as last winter.

Why single out UK?

Other Western countries are not spiking like Britain

Italy, Spain, France are all low

Might those places be more indicative of things to come?

Probably coming

I've seen some flattening curves in other places

Not enough days to call it a trend but worth watching

Not that I'm in favor of doing a damn thing collectively in response. But individually, let's watch where it goes

Hope so. Last year the upward trend started in mid-October, was in full swing by early November, and didn't trend down until January of 2021

Most places in the US are still trending downward, albeit at a slower rate

Hope so. Last year the upward trend started in mid-October, was in full swing by early November, and didn't trend down until January of 2021

Most places in the US are still trending downward, albeit at a slower rate

This is true for the south, but it now looks like a lot of northern states are starting upward trends again. It will be interesting to see if they skyrocket like last winter, or if it is much more gradual.

Another week later and Texas' 7-day average is down to 3,156. Hopefully the trend continues... but yesterday was the highest in a couple weeks, so we'll see.

But in other good news, the South is doing really well right now. It is really interesting how this good news for the South doesn't get the same press coverage as when it was going up.

I mean I think it's two things... 1) pushing cases forwarded due to our lower vaccination rates caused the virus to spread a lot just a few months ago. Cases per capita should be lower because of that, but it's hard to ignore that we paid for that with thousands of deaths and one hundred thousand hospitalations. Not sure we deserve credit today for what went through in August and September.

2) we are going to lag northern states because of the same seasonal variables that are driving cases up in those states. I don't think COVID will be as bad this winter in the south, but you are naive if you think the trend of declining cases will be continuing in the coming weeks.
