If you had bet me all the tea in China, I would never have expected this outcome. A co-worker (actually he reports to me), came down with Covid about 6 weeks ago. 30 year old male, weighs 650 pounds (verified on one of our floor scales in our production facility). Almost immediately his condition degrades and he's rushed to the hospital and placed on a ventilator. He was in a coma and on the ventilator for about 30 days...most of the time at 100% oxygen. Doctors told his family to just pray, as there wasn't much hope for him.

Two weeks ago, he awakes from his coma and is now in rehab. He hopes to be able to walk within the next few weeks.

Truly a miracle.

Hopefully he lost some weight during his hospital stay. 650 is mighty impressive.

Dayum...i thought my 450lb coworker was gonna be done when he got it...but out for 2 weeks and back to normal (which is about 1 step away from death).

650 is...impressive.

I truly feel sorry for people that heavy. It's a mental health/addiction issue and they get stuck in a low self esteem cycle. Especially people who are genetically prone to "big bones".

Even on this site there are people that just casually act like these people are not human. It's trashy and classless.

I'm glad your employee pulled through and I hope he gets back to being healthy.

i find this pretty fascinating...that someone that large can not only be real, but presumably fit in a car to drive to work, and somehow provide some value added service to a company. the physics of everything he does from walking, to sitting in a chair and typing on a standard keyboard is amazing.

Probably lost weight during his coma

Edit: I see forum troll beat me to it

Not being snarky, but seriously impressed that walking is a goal. I would figure at 650 walking is a no go, regardless of covid status.

Yep, most people struggling with massive weight problems are dealing with an out of control addiction and need help getting their lives back on track. Breaks my heart to see these people so easily marginalized as less than in our society.

To your point, he doesn't walk as you and I walk...he waddles side to side. I've been told he's lost a lot of weight, but even 100 pounds barely makes a dent. As someone else said, there are other issues. I truly hope he sees this as the miracle that it is and makes the changes that are necessary!

Kind of like the same people who assume it's a "mental health/addiction issue." People have been fed (no pun intended) a lot of bad information and recommendations by our government and the health care industry over the years. It's all coming home to roost now.

Actor, Ethan Suplee lost 300# from 550 down to 250. You may recognize him from "Remember the Titans," "Mallrats," and "My Name Is Earl."

He's a beast today.

He actually lost it twice. He lost it, bounced back up, and lost it again and has been able to maintain it.

This is the problem.

Veggies and nuts should be at the bottom.
Then fats and dairy.
Then meats.
Then breads.
Then sugars.

This food pyramid is garbage and the reason Americans are so fat.

100%.

I cut out the bottom row and that was a huge part of weight loss and improvements in blood pressure etc.

Agree, saw a documentary how the researcher/scientist who first came up with that pyramid cherry picked data to manipulate the results.

Sugar and bread makes you feel hungry again much quicker than the other foods in my experience. Thus leading to over eating and obesity.

The food pyramid is wrong but let's not blame it for the obesity epidemic. It's not like 650lb people are consulting the food pyramid before gorging themselves on processed crap

Not to fully blame but once you get people addicted to breads and other things and get them overweight at a young age it can spiral out of control easy.

Regardless, it's an example of our government and experts giving awful advice to millions for decades. But hey…trust 'em…it's science.

Care to guess why people eat so many carbs and why they are so cheap and easily accessed?

Government subsidies.

What was it like asking him if he would weigh himself on the warehouse scale? Genuinely curious how that event transpired.

True.

I think he was like 450. Got down to 200, ballooned back to 550 and then got down to 250 and had maintained it.

It was interesting, was in a small town in Colorado this past week. Stopped into the Wal Mart...set up like a small version of a super center. It had groceries, except no vegetables, produce or non pre-packaged meat.

I have read about food deserts before but it really hit home in the middle of a state known for its outdoor activities that one of the two grocery stores in town didn't have anything that wasn't processed.

Same thing most Dollar General's do.

It's a lot easier to ship and store non-perishables.

THIS is how one should handle obesity. It's a fantastic story if you haven't followed it and his coaches are amazing as well and I recommend their services if you happen to be looking.

I know that they say "just start moving". Well, I'll say that is not enough. The goal should be getting to a point where one trains hard and intense for certain periods of time. We evolved from ancestors who lived hard lives. Today we can sit behind desks all day and get soft. Weight training is how we accommodate for the lack of "hard life" our ancestors evolved from and that we still need to be our best. Also, watch how he trains. This is why I say actual training is infinitely better then just doing hard manual labor as a job as you cannot track it, have no consistency to it, most do use proper "form" and there's a lot of down time. Guided/coached weight lifting is controlled and designed to make one better. To make all of us a real athlete. That's how one truly makes themselves unkillable and how covid will just bounce off of most who are in this condition. /steps off soap box

Fwiw most disadvantaged hoods dont have grocery stores at all, or if they do its no fresh anything.

Literally mcdonalds, 7-11, or maybe a local fried food joint IS ALL THEY can access!

Now, the reason for that is they ****ing steal any real store blind, but it is incredibly sad and hard for people locked in there that want to be honest and healthy. Its nearly impossible. I ran a charity to help but even that was tough as the minsters and their wives we worked with even angled/stole when they could.

Covid related bc i think i caught covid last week.

Funny thing is, the stuff on the bottom of the pyramid doesn't even taste good 90% of the time. Give me charro beans, grilled brussel sprouts, cashews, or fresh pineapple any day over a loaf of bread.
