An old coworker received a covid booster shot, a flu shot, and a testosterone shot in one visit. That night he was in an ICU with encephalitis.

Am I drinking conspiracy koolaid, or does it appear that the covid booster might not play will with other injections?

No evidence that getting flu + COVID at the same time increases side effect risk. Testosterone should not cause encephalitis ever. Encephalitis is not correlated with either flu or COVID vaccine. Likely just bad luck with timing kind of like a baby I had last week who happened to get fever and a seizure after vaccine but ended up having Salmonella colitis that just happened to start the same day as the vaccines.

Hope your friend gets better, encephalitis is scary stuff.

That seems like a stretch of a conclusion to jump to considering the little information posted.

There are only about 200,000 cases in the US every year.
Encephalitis is most commonly caused by a viral or bacterial infection that directly affects the brain. It can also be caused by a dormant virus that caused infection in the past and becomes reactivated. Common viruses that cause encephalitis are herpes simplex type 1, flu, chicken pox, and West Nile.

A third, more rare, cause is an autoimmune reaction that is triggered by a vaccine. One peer reviewed article I read said there were 1396 cases of encephalitis reported after vaccination in the US from 1990-2010. That's only 70 cases per year.

People who have weakened immune systems are most at risk for encephalitis, so it disproportionately affects the very young and the elderly.

So, while it's not impossible one or more of the vaccines caused the problem, it's very rare and certainly not a conclusion that could or should be drawn just based on the OP. It's also possible the person could have already had a viral infection (pre-vaccination) that caused the encephalitis.

Thank you for the information. I knew that this was the place to ask.

Is there any evidence that getting the flu + covid shot at the same time doesn't increase side effect risks? We've only been doing boosters + covid for a couple of weeks.

Baby getting a vaccine shot???

It has been studied and current data shows that there is no increased side effects getting flu + COVID shots at the same time.

I'm not sure what the remainder of your comments even mean.

You said a "baby" patient of yours had a fever and seizure after a vaccine. I was shocked a "baby" got a vaccine. I thought vaccines were for 12+ only.

maybe i'm mistaken here, but I think he might be talking about one of the regularly scheduled childhood vaccines, not the covid one

that bad timing is the worst. we had a less sever version of this kind of timing with my son when he was just over a year old. he went through a weird period where for about 6-8 months, any time he got sick with a fever, 24-48 hrs after the fever broke he would break out in hives. The first time this happened though, the breakout was lined up just right to show up 4-6 hours after his flu shot, so for a brief period we thought we were having an allergic reaction to the shot.

Oh gotcha sorry- yeah it was routine 6 month old vaccines not COVID.
