Friend's 10-year-old has Covid. Symptoms started last Thursday, and still dealing with fever, headaches, and nausea. Also has had some congestion, but lungs seem good.

Going on 4+ days with symptoms seems to be outside the norm from what little I've read for a 10-year-old. Anyone have any insight on when they should seek treatment or what symptoms might be cause for alarm?

I would think fever and O2 levels are two most important things to keep and eye on. Could be Covid only or could be Covid and something else.

My son (9) came home with it about a month ago. He was puny the first two days but cough, sneezing, congestion is still around. I've had the same stuff that started about 3 days after his first symptoms but never had the Covid portion. So in our instance we definitely had multiple things hit at the same time.

I think the main thing is to seek treatment if fever lasts >7 days or if he/she develops respiratory difficulty or abdominal pain.

Respiratory difficulty could indicate pneumonia.

Our friend's 7yo was recently admitted to TCH for MIS-C (Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children) from COVID-19. The docs there told our friend they have seen about 250 cases of it. They told our friend that abdominal pain was a common presenting symptom of MIS-C. Our friend's son had a very severe course, but thank god is improved.

My daughter is a very strong, healthy 12 year old and she was sick for nine days. Fever finally went away after I think day 5. But the headaches, body aches, sore throat, and general fatigue were a beating. It has been over a month now and she still gets tired and food tastes a little funny.

MIS-C can be originally diagnosed as appendicitis. Since it happens several weeks after infection, sometimes the connection is missed.

I would take my child in if it doesn't get better in a week, or if fever can't be controlled with Tylenol/Advil.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough

Hopefully kiddoc chimes in here, but, as gunan pointed out, a fever over 7 days is worrisome. In general, something like 95% of kids will get over a fever within 5-7 days (kiddoc, please help me on the statistics). Prolonged fever, or a fever that goes away and comes back a few days later, could indicate a secondary infection or something else concerning.

I will say though, the examples given here do illustrate that kids aren't immune to this. Yes, they're unlikely to die, but there is more to infection than simply death or no death. Whether they should be vaccinated or not is another risk analysis you should discuss with your pediatrician and in your family.

My 10 yo was sent home last Wednesday from school due to possible exposure, and first tested + on Friday morning. Fever in the 100-101 range sat and Sunday and barely a fever now. GI issues have been his biggest symptoms.

10-year-old in question turned the corner late yesterday and had a good day today. Thanks everyone for your responses.

Glad to hear it. My 8 yr old got it in July from my wife, and had an earache bad enough to have to go the ER down the street. Was pretty much 100% 2 days later.

Best news is, they shouldn't really feel any pressure now to get them a vax. Or at least wait a while, maybe before next school year.

Late to thread clinic has been super busy lately 25-30/day.

Glad the 10 year old turned the corner! As bigtruck said we get very worried when fevers last > 5 days and start the workup for weird stuff that you don't really want to learn about.
