the United States could be at risk for a severe flu season this year, Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky warned Wednesday.

That's because the U.S. population may now have reduced immunity against influenza after seasonal flu cases reached an all-time low last year when large parts of the nation were shut down,

There were around 2,000 flu cases last influenza season, according to data reported to the CDC. By comparison, the 2019-2020 flu season saw an estimated 35 million cases, according to the agency.

Walensky urged Americans to get shots for both Covid and the flu, saying vaccinations are not just important for ending the pandemic but also preventing other infectious diseases. An increase in flu infections this winter could put an additional burden on the nation's health-care system, increasing stress on health care workers who are already fighting a high number of hospitalizations due to Covid, she said.

I think the biggest risk is that they completely whiff on the vaccines. They use last year's strains from Australia to predict what is going to happen in the northern hemisphere. Since there was no flu last year, it's a complete shot in the dark.

Have they used the "twindemic" term yet?

if you look at the Texas Department of Health data regarding season flu activity for the last year, 2020 and 2021 flu data shows that flu cases were the lowest they have been in close to 40 years... hmm, wonder what could be affecting normal flu cases?

Maybe social distancing, increased awareness of hand washing, more people staying home at the first sign of illness, fewer children in schools and daycares, and fewer people in offices? Or do you have another theory?

my buddy is a Dr in Houston, he told me about the data and what its showing, he has his opinions about what the data means and so do I, but guess what, people need to look at the data and use some common since, the flu didnt just disappear for the first time in many years.

heres the link, you click on the link and go find the map showing the standard flu curves for the last 5 to 6 years and then where 2020 ended up, the is more data going way further back on line

Texas Influenza Surveillance Report | 2020-2021 Season | MMWR Week 38 | 10.1.21

if you click on the 2 years it shows, i believe this link will go back to 2014, it says Covid deaths can be include as influenza and pneumonia deaths... odd thing is 2020 2021 was lower than most other years.

Aggie on here posted that he works for the leading cold and flu over the counter medication and their sales were down over 95%.

So yeah, conspiracy theories aside, the flu really did disappear as Covid ran wild.

It's not odd, the primary driver of influenza and pneumonia deaths has never been influenza.

Well the CDC hasn't been remotely wrong regarding anything this whole time so I guess we're all ****ed.

I don't buy the narrative that because people were locking down and social distancing there was no flu.

In New Zealand, everything was wide open all winter and there was no flu season either. The only flu came out of the quarantine facilities.

Unless it was because there was lockdown over a year ago and there was a lack of travel from country to country.

They also significantly limited international travel.

Yes - that really seems to be the case (and said that in my post). And now things are opening back up, it will just pop back up again.

The *CDC* said that this flu season was going to be "severe"?! They aren't exactly one to use hyperbole or utilize "noble lies" so long as the ends justify the means (in their opinion) - so I'd imagine this dire warning will resonate with most Americans

Warnings of severe flu seasons are as common as Internet warnings of "severe" winters; and pre-date covid by a long time. No one pays attention if you say it's going to be "normal"

Based on the frequency of other viral pathogens I have seen this summer in the young kids compared to prior summers I suspect it is going to be a very busy winter.

N=1 I know but I will not be surprised at all if we see tremendous flu numbers in kids.

Oh, I don't know, maybe we shouldn't have shut down in the first place.
