Mom is 87 and in fantastic health. She does live in an elder condo complex so is exposed to caregivers and employees all day long.

She received Pfizer in Dec/Jan. Does she need to booster? Should she get Moderna or JJ to mix it up?

I'm concerned that she will have a panic attack soon because the news talks about the booster and she has not received it. :-(

What does she want?

It seems to me there's no downside to getting it if she wants it.

My parents are both in their early 80s. They live with us and are in excellent health but they want it when it's available to them. I told them to ask their doctors when they should get it.

Get her to enroll in Texas Cares and get a titer- no need to guess.

I asked her if she would do the study and her answer was no. If it is on the news, she believes it 100%.

And when she decides it is time to do something, it needs to be immediate. She does not understand why her elder community has not already arranged the booster. I told her the govt has not even decided who needs one yet.

The protocol now is for immune compromised to get the booster. According to what is said on the literature my parents don't automatically qualify because they don't have the conditions listed... but I think age probably trumps that, which is why I told my mother to ask her doc.

If your mother wants the shot now, I say take her to get it immediately. She might get sick with a reaction, but if she wants it and is anxious about it, then I'd take her and just get it done, ASAP.

My in laws in Texas (80 & 83 years old) walked into the pharmacy last week and got a third shot without any trouble.

I don't think the booster can hurt anything, but I'm not sure there is much evidence that it helps unless you are immune compromised.

Is protection from the vaccine waning, or is the vaccine only 60% effective against delta? Does boosting your response against the spike protein from the original strain help at all with delta?

We just don't know.

Would a fully vaccinated person getting a mild case of delta provide them with the best protection? Probably, but with so many unvaccinated people still dying everyday it's not a public health strategy that makes sense.

They're fully vaccinated with Pfizer (as am I). I think their concern is that it doesn't seem to work as well as the Moderna, so they're thinking of getting the Moderna for a different thing to boost their antibodies.

I, too, might do that, though I've read that it might be good to try the J&J for a bit of a different response.

My husband and I have both done the antibody testing.

He had the Moderna (and a bit of a reaction for a few hours)
His spike antibody number is in the 2000s.

My Spike Antibody is 216.

So it is obvious that the Moderna created a higher antibody number.

The good news, though, is that we've all been living life normally, going wherever including church, and have been around those who turned up C+ a day or two after being with them and we've been fine.

I'm going to base my decision on whatever my next number is, but I'm leaning toward getting the booster whenever I can.

Best solution is the turn off the news.

Biden's own CDC director was on the Today Show saying that the booster "may" make it less transmissible and "hopeful" that it "might" be beneficial. But even said they had no hard data to say it will do anything.

When below 100 would be my advice. I'm at 1600 7 months post moderna. I'm only 49 though.

When I registered for Texas Cares I think it said they only test ages 5-80. Something to consider. I got the 2nd Pfizer dose in February. Antibodies were around 500. Will probably get a booster because I'm exposed so much.

At 87, I wouldn't want to risk anything. Take her to get Moderna, apparently that causes a larger spike in anti-bodies. The mental relief will also be huge.

Why are you giving medical advice in contradiction with cdc recommendations? CDC recommends boosters be same brand previously received.

"The CDC recommends that booster doses match the original mRNA vaccines people received earlier this year. This subsequent dose should be given at least 28 days after the second dose of the vaccine. If you absolutely cannot find a matching dose of vaccine, it would be OK to get the other one."

If possible, OK to get the other. Either way, get one.

Yes, the CDC recommends the same brand, but OK to get the other, of which studies show Moderna has better results.

You seriously comparing that with twitter based equine dewormer snorting that is landing people in the hospital with liver problems? Not surprising I have to say.

This is not what you recommended.
