Outdoor transmission for kids

3 year old son had a 30 minute swim lesson yesterday with a swim instructor yesterday who subsequently tested positive the next day. The lesson was outside in our backyard pool and I would estimate about half the lesson is spent within a few feet of each other for instruction while he is actively swimming the other half.

It seems like the consensus is that outdoor transmission risk is very low but in the professional TexAgs opinion, does this warrant quarantine? We are at a loss for what to do and selfishly I'm not looking forward to telling him we can't go to the game Saturday.

Appreciate the opinions and I'll take cover if this has been discussed already.

I would not quarantine but personally would keep away from my mother and father as a precaution as they are older and my mom is in poor health overall. But both are vaccinated. So if you have extremely at risk in your family, and they would be in a lot of contact with your son Saturday, that's where my only concern would be. Totally would take to the game otherwise

If he doesn't have symptoms, I'd continue with your plans.

This.

Outdoor transmission is documented to be insanely low. Like less than 0.10%. Add in the fact that they were in a chlorine pool that would kill the virus and I see no reason to not carry on with your plans.

Just for ease of mind, have you considered buying a Binax at home test kit to use with him Friday evening?

Absolutely. Assuming we can find one, we for sure plan to go ahead and test him Friday night or Saturday morning. Seems like they are hard to come by recently.

My 2.5 yo daughter didn't mind more than momentarily when we tested her with it a few days ago.

We found some at HEB the other day. Good idea just test him Saturday and go if negative.

I wouldn't even waste money on the test. Every kid in our school is getting a higher dose than that every day. When my 11 year old came home with it, I never even tested. Our company allows you to come to work if somebody in your family is positive, but you're vaccinated and asymptomatic.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough

I assume you had instructor and child both wearing masks during the lesson, so kiddo should be fine!

Don't test him. You wouldn't flu test him in the same scenario without symptoms.

Was the swim instructor symptomatic or did they have to test for their job?

I wouldn't quarantine him or test him preemptively, but I would be on the lookout for even small symptoms. If he wakes up Saturday and you think "Huh, he seems sick" without an obvious fever, I would stay home at that point.

Appreciate the feedback. Swim instructor had no symptoms during the lesson and is vaccinated (whatever that's worth). He's not showing any symptoms so far but have an at home test if needed. Might just test him pre-game tomorrow for peace of mind. Kid wants to see the Ags play!

Mhhh don't let him around any old or unvaccinated people. Get him tested next week to be sure, but I wouldn't worry about it. Chances are quite low.

I had no problem finding Binex test (they come with 2). Our HEB, local walgreeens, and CVS's all had them, but CVS was the cheapest ($24) and we had a coupon. You can see if they have it in stock on CVS website.

If it makes you feel any better, my vaccinated wife: slept in the same bed with, napped, bathed, rode next to in a car with, did everything a mother of an 11 month old does with our 11 month old for 2 days with what we thought was just a migraine that turned out to be COVID. After five days from her first symptoms The baby and myself are negative.

If your sons exposure was from a pre symptomatic vaccinated person, all outdoors in the sun. You got nothing to worry about.

I'd wager most mothers don't sleep in the same bed as their 11 month old

You could buy one of the $20 tests from HEB and check him Saturday morning for some peace of mind. I think it's got 25% false negative rate, but if it's positive it's very accurate

Chlorine kills everything/most things, so Unless you swim in green water or they kissed or got coughed on you should be good

I don't think so (but not certain). I thought it was for one when I looked into it before. I could totally be wrong though. Let me know if you read otherwise. I would look myself, but I'm out eating dinner.
