Mansfield Man Battles Covid for the Third Time

This doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies. Does this not put a dent in the "natural immunity" argument? He was also vaccinated in March after beating a milder second case of Covid. They say he doesn't have any obvious underlying conditions that would open him up to being more susceptible.

I know this is probably an extreme outlier of an outlier, but it still raises concerns. I've been personally banking on my vaccine and previous exposure to Covid rich environments (I was at Mardi Gras in New Orleans in 2020, a week before the first major outbreaks in the city) to hopefully prevent me from catching it.

Always going to be outliers, if reinfection was happening with any regularity it would be all over the news

3 COVID and vaxxed? Wow, that is terrible and also the ultimate outlier.

As is the case with every microorganism that exists in the world. After the disease portion in biology in college, you'd feel like you needed to live in a bubble to survive, when ironically it's quite the opposite. These things happen occasionally and in a scale from 1-10, with 10 being extreme concern and 1 being not much at all, most of us should be around 0-2 on this case

Geez. That's nuts.

This was kinda what I expected after reading about his original hospitalization:

Quote:

She said they do believe lung damage from the first go-round and pneumonia are playing a role in the severity this time.

I think we will find out over time that certain people are more genetically predisposed to get it.

Obviously the vaccine tips all the odds In your favor, but there will always be these outliers.

Not to make light of this, but it's like the guy who gets struck by lightning on the great outdoors. That's kind of terrible luck.

That's what I've been thinking, some people are just more genetically predisposed to getting it. Still sucks for the guy and his family having to go through that 3 times.

I would imagine it's going to be similar to certain cancers.

How a history of a cancer runs in a family, I bet the same with this.

It really does suck for the family, it's why we need really good anti virals. Or a way to identify these people and get them treatment right away.

It sounds to me like he's got long term damage from the first round of Covid, which is making him more susceptible to getting it again.

Very sad.

So I know Corey - not real well - and apparently he had a very, very bad first case and suffered significant lung damage. His fiance claims he would have died this time without the vaccine - who knows? And his hospitalization this time is not (according to her) due to COVID - he has some form of pneumonia.

So as you all know, he's not hospitalized for COVID - but COVID was a major player in it.

The limited studies that are out there indicate less than 1% of people will have a reinfection. The Israeli study conducted on 1/5th of their population (149,XXX) had only 154 individuals with confirmed reinfection and most of those were mild cases.

The Denmark study indicated approximately 0.65% of people had reinfections (both categorize reinfection as two negative tests - greater than 90 days apart). Most of those with reinfection were over 65 and had severe covid symptoms the first go around.

I continue to monitor the limited amount of data that is actually out there and available, but logic would tell you that if reinfection was occurring on a broad scale, we would have seen it already. Until that data changes, I am going to continue to rely on natural immunity.

Interesting things I have seen:
  • People with Asthma have a slightly higher chance of reinfection
  • People that use nicotine (it didn't specify smoking but I assume that is the case) also have a higher likelihood of reinfection
  • there is some disagreement on the duration between tests and "false positives"... most studies utilize the 90 day threshold for reporting but some doctors seem to think individuals may still be able to test positive after initial infection much longer than 90 days
  • In the Israeli Study I believe the only two deaths that occurred were from elderly individuals that were in the ICU the first time around and had severe cases

I know a half dozen people who have had Covid twice, so it would not be shocking honestly at this point to hear about people having it 3 times.

My circle of friends, I've seen higher % of people reinfected than what is being reported. My assumption is many of the reinfected aren't going to the hospitals, so it is being under reported.

Off the top of my head I know of 6 friends reinfected (none went to the hospital)...out of say 20 people in the normal circle I run around with. Neighborhood, Church, Sports Teams friends that I would see once per week or more.

That's 30% in my group.

Q - was each time symptomatic positive?

Yes, but I can confirm everyone of these people have had less severe symptoms. None of them were knocked out for a week like the first infection. Everyone was sinus like, cough, and then a couple had stomach issues or back pain. But all of them were only 3-4 days of lighter symptoms compared to first bout, and none of them were so down and out they had to lay in bed all day. They all (including myself) functioned normally in our daily activities.

Thanks - That sounds similar to vaccinated people's breakthrough infections.

wow, literally just got a text from a neighbor friend who has a confirmed positive for 2nd time. with light cold like symptoms. that makes 7 I now know first hand (not acquaintances) who have had covid 2 times.

People are getting covid 2 times. I'm believing more and more the lack of reporting of this is simply because very few re-infected are being hospitalized.

I'm just running off the data. Way too many variable to account for in your or my circle of friends.

In my circle I know of zero cases of reinfection vs about 10 and counting for breakthrough cases. Not against the vaccine as most of those cases were mild, just personal observation.

I know of 4 breakthrough cases, but honestly most in my circle did not get vaccinated the first "wild" wave of Covid.

And they tested positive both times? Or just got sick with symptoms both times.

My brother and his wife believe they've had it three times, never vaccinated. First time was the worst, but still mild. The second and third times were extremely mild, but they experienced loss of taste and smell again. Only way they knew it was Covid.
