45 year old male with no health problems. I know I need to change this just based on age, but I don't have a PC doc, just never go to the doctor outside of the orthopedic but that's another story. Eat as healthy as I'm able, workout 4 days a week.

Received my first Pfizer vaccine last Wednesday evening. Felt fine Thursday morning and headed off to work. By around noon started feeling run down. Body aches and joint pain soon set in. Really strange joint pain. Old / nagging injuries (lateral meniscus gone, bilateral thumb tendinitis, compressed vertebrae) flared up simultaneously. Fingers felt like they were hot dogs! Pretty good headache ensues, so I headed home to sleep it off.

Friday had same symptoms, but to a lesser degree so I felt like I was on the right track. Saturday morning I felt great. While watching my daughter's volleyball tournament Saturday morning the my energy level just suddenly cratered. I had my wife drive me home, and I slept for about 20 hours. Since then I've intermittently had the following symptoms daily: joint pain, muscle aches, headache, chills (no fever), extreme fatigue, brain fog, nausea.

Sunday I felt like I had the worst sinus infection of my life, but I didn't have the typical nasty yellow / green discharge. What little was present was clear, like seasonal allergies. I'm 45, live in this area my entire life, and never had allergies.

Finally went to the doctor (CareNow) Monday morning. NP just nodded as I was describing what was happing and said that's pretty consistent with what she's been seeing lately. Gave me 800 MG ibuprofen, 20 MG prednisone, Azelastine nasal spray (so I could sleep!), and Doxycycline to be filled tomorrow if I'm not feeling better by then. Prednisone and alternating ibuprofen/ Tylenol have help mitigate some symptoms, but not completely.

Today I slapped my pulse ox meter on and my resting heart rate is 110 (typically 70), and O2 sat is 95 (typically 99).

Question: have any of you docs found this to be typical as the NP said? I'm just not reading anecdotal evidence of that, but it's hard to find real info. Reading Dr Google sends you down the cytokine storm / MIS-A rabbit hole, so hoping for some advice from some of you that deal with this daily. If my body is handling vaccine 1 this poorly, what should I expect from the second dose?

Would greatly appreciate any advice that you may be able to provide.

Thanks

Got the Moderna shot last Friday and still have congestion and cough. Short of breath but not extreme. Guess I had the covid in the last little while is why my side effects are so bad. If I would have known I wouldn't have got the shot. Really considering not getting the second one!

So I am with you I don't understand why side effects are so bad?

Everyone in my family (but me, so far) has had exactly these symptoms this week. Wife swore she was running a fever multiple times because the chills were so bad, but she never did. Whatever it is, the kid brought it home from day care. It's just something that's going around right now, and sounds to me like mayve just coincidental timing to come down with it right after recovering from your shot. No one in my house has had a covid shot since April, so it definitely wasn't that for us.

Also, I am not a doctor. So take my info for what it's worth as a story from an anonymous internet guy.

No, not typical symptoms after vaccine administration.

I also find it ridiculous that you can't leave an urgent care anymore without leaving with some type of antibiotic, despite nothing of what you stated being consistent with a bacterial infection where Doxy would be necessary.

This is the problem with urgent cares (in general, although there are a few that do good work, but they are few and far between). They are run primarily by NPs and PAs with very little physician oversight. I frequently field calls from UCs where the NP is asking me how to appropriately manage the condition they are seeing. While I am always happy to help another medical personnel in need, my first response is always, "do you not have a physician present that can guide you through this?" I have seen obvious heart attacks on their ECGs that they let drive to the hospital. I have seen obviously normal ECGs in patients that they burdened with a gigantic ER bill for their misread as abnormal that the patient received for their elbow pain. I've seen run of the mill lacerations that they send to the ER that I have one of my medical students stitch up.

However, throughout COVID, I have seen them prescribe z-packs, doxycycline and steroids for a known COVID pneumonia, despite what should be common knowledge that antibiotics are ineffective for viral infections among medical personnel. Also, them ignoring that steroids are ineffective for patients not requiring oxygen, and potentially increasing mortality in those that don't need oxygen therapy.

I'm sorry for the rant, but I have had too many patients, friends, and family members upset that their antibiotics aren't working for their COVID when a little bit of patient education would have resolved most of their fears.

Appreciate the original post. It's good to see open communication about side effects.

I would think it very difficult to determine whether the symptoms described are a reaction to the shot vs covid infection itself coinciding with the vaccine.

Yes sir, saw A doctor Monday. Really my biggest takeaway thus far is its way past time for me to find a good PCP.

That's good to know. I decided to go ahead and get checked because I suspected that I coincidentally caught something simultaneous to my vaccine. I figured the NP would have a good handle on the random viruses that my be going around and was surprised when she stated that she's seeing this a lot with recently vaccinated people. I'm still leaning that way despite her claims, so thanks for the info.

Totally agree, and I left out the part about the Cyclobenzaprine script "so I could sleep better" that I didn't get filled! I think everyone wants to leave the dr with a magic pill to make them better, and there a lots out there happy to oblige.

Forgot to mention that I did take 2 at home Binax COVID tests overt the weekend just to make sure and both were negative. I have no idea how accurate they are, but the NP said those were pretty accurate.

One way to get more people to get vaccinated is to give it some positive side effects.

For example, mix it with Viagra and people will line up for booster shots.

Just got the Moderna jab on Saturday. I have never had a positive test for COVID and as far as I know, I have not had the virus.

Pain in shot area is still present after 48 hours. Very tender.

After getting the jab, I felt dizzy and had a small headache. I didn't feel like doing much activity and took some big naps Saturday afternoon.

Saturday night I had an elevated heart rate and tightness in my chest. I looked it up and found that an elevated heart rate is common for Moderna and Pfizer in the first 5 days after getting the jab.

I took it easy on Sunday.

I am feeling better this Monday morning.
--

I was very hesitant to get the jab due to a lack of trust in the quickly developed vaccine and uncertainty with any deadly side effects. The jury is still out and I hope there are not long term problems.

Since I went ahead and jumped off the cliff and got the jab, I might as well get the full force of the vaccine and get the second shot in a couple of weeks.

BTW-- Out of all the vaccines, my cardiologist recommended Moderna. She had held off from getting the jab until recently. But, due to the severity of the Delta variant and what she saw happening in the hospitals, she got Moderna. She spent a ton of time researching all the vaccines and this was the one she felt was the best. Pfizer is supposedly not as strong at fending off COVID.

Good job. It sounds like though you had doubts, you kept an open mind, evaluated and your position evolved. I wish more people were like you.
I also felt the heart race thing immediately afterwards but wondered if it wasn't simply anticipation. Anyway, tipping my hat to keeping your mind open when this is so highly charged most people are just backing themselves into their respective corners.

Truth be told, my push for me to get the jab is so I can go to Kyle Field and not have my wife freak out that I am going to bring COVID back to the house....

good on you, and I'll add it's a good thing you have a health care professional whose judgment you trust. that's more than most people can say, if everyone did it might make this ordeal easier to navigate for those who are confused, scared, and seeking answers.

Along the same vein...I've heard of people with chronic back pain getting pretty bad flare-ups when they get the vaccine. Maybe it triggers an inflammatory response? Any truth to that? I have some pretty significant back issues.

I had no issues with 1st shot (moderna). Just like a flu shot. Arm hurt a little that night but was 100% when I woke up next morning. I was prepared for a day or two of bad side effects with the 2nd shot from nearly everyone I knew that had gotten it before me (mostly medical folks). Started out just like the first one, sore arm. Woke up feeling fine the next morning (but my pillow was wet - don't think anything fun happened, pretty sure I must have sweated at night). Thought I was gonna skate by with nothing, then around 10 am my arm started aching, then both elbows, then my shoulders, then all my joints. By lunch time I was done. Ran a 101 fever the rest of the day and just laid my ass on the couch. Then like magic at about 9 PM my fever broke and all the joint pain went away and my energy felt completely normal. I did go to sleep early (for me) that night at around 11 and slept like I was a teenager until 10am the next day) but when I woke up I was totally fine. Was a littler nervous it would come on strong again a few hours after being up like the day before but it never did and I haven't had an issue since.

Wife was vaxxed a few months after me and she took both like a champ. Sore arm 1st day of both. No problems 2nd day with any of them (maybe a little tired the 2nd day of 2nd shot). Pretty sure she thinks I was faking it. She did end up getting a weird red rash on her upper arm where she had the shot like 10 days after the 2nd shot, but no other symptoms. Went away a day later.

Sorry for the dear diary entry, OP, where I was going was my dad and I got vaxxed at same time. The 2nd shot he had a bad reaction in an old shoulder injury site kind of like you are describing. It was stiff and painful for about 7 days. Right about the time he was getting tired of it and was about ready to go see a doctor, it magically went away and no problems since.

My older sister actually had worse reaction to first shot than the 2nd. I think she felt about like I did with my 2nd one, but it lasted 3 days. Then she was 100%. She was a little reactant to get 2nd one since the first one had been rough and everyone was saying 2nd one was worse, but she went ahead and actually had no side effects at all other than arm pain for 1st day.

It's just a weird vaccine that makes your immune system go a little nuts so it hits everyone a little differently. Moral of the story is everyone I know was totally back to normal a week after vaccine and has had no trouble since. Although who knows long term, but then again who knows what the long term effects of Bluetooth headphones and 5G wireless networks are.

Life's about risks and everyone should make personal decision based on what they think works for them. Hope your side effects just magically go away soon like they did for everyone I know.

And I feel your pain on PCP. I never had one either until I was 40. Wife made me get one following a night of too much whiskey and hot wings and waking up in the middle of night thinking I was dying. Not so bad. I was worried about the ole finger up the butt thing but apparently that's one for 50+ (or else my doc just hasn't ever wanted to go there).

I had my second Pfizer shot on 4/19. I had all of the symptoms you described and just chalked everything you mentioned as the immune response. Ever since then, I have had numbness and tingling in my right arm. Also joint pain in my hands and feet. I have been to three doctors now; my PC, Orthopedic and finally Rheumatologist. They have done x-rays and blood work and can't find anything that would be causing this. The only variable that changed for me was the Pfizer vax. I have seen other anecdotal testimonies out there about ongoing joint pain. I am 49 and workout a fair amount and have a BMI under 30. I really don't want to rely on pain meds like NSAIDs and Tylenol. Too many bad side affects from long term use IMO. I have added Turmeric on top of my Rev cocktail to see if that helps with joint pain.
