Every ER in our region is boarding almost half of their beds with admitted patients. Transfused a patient with a hemoglobin of 4 while in the waiting room recently. We can't go on divert because every hospital is the same.
It does wax and wane, but if a serious issue walks in, it could be hours before they get appropriate care. But I guess we can clap about getting to herd immunity quicker.

There's certainly a lot more covid cases and hospitals have less staff to deal with this surge than they did last summer (generally speaking).

I agree. I think early on, based on relative "success" in countries like Japan, South Korea, etc that had adopted masking it certainly made sense to at least give it a shot. I think now it is pretty well settled that masking does very very little.

As of the 9th 30% of TMC ICU beds were filled by COVID patients. They have cancelled elective surgeries.
They gain nothing through fear porn. They've long said they gauge severity of the pandemic through the lens of hospitalizations.
Aside from having a great data feed they've been consistent in this message. They didn't shut down the profit engine as a collective group of elite hospitals because fear/control.
They've seen their icu numbers quadruple in a month and their daily intake to the hospital surpass their admitted covid patient totals.
Media makes money selling fear or hate or whatever but no business shuts off its revenue stream.
I'm not saying it's the end of days but a little caution might be warranted.

These numbers are alarming. If any Texas resident has a non-Covid emergency e.g. cardiac arrest, heart attack, etc,, then emergency/ICU care will be hard to come by.....

2 of our best MICU RNs quit today. They have been in the ICU since 3/2020. There are so many new faces - I hardly recognize any of them. The burnout and attrition is real. It's a huge problem. And due to the virus.

Trust me, I get the pandemic fatigue. I think most of us are extremely tired hearing about Covid. But we're still very much in a public health crisis that affects humanity.

The issue this time is not surge beds, it's staffing. Last night we were holding many patients in the ER not because we didn't have a room to put them in but because those rooms didn't have nurses. The nurses we have working here are getting burned out because we are being asked to take more patients than we believe is safe for effective care. A lot of our staff, especially the younger staff, isn't picking up overtime. Being offered essentially four times their average pay to work in overtime shift and people aren't doing it.
What is also really starting to piss me off is we have so many people in their 80s and 90s here for non-Covid issues, including several who are frequent admits and are basically vegetables. Trached, pretty much comatose. Families refuse to make them DNR. Families refuse to put them on hospice. We have three or four of those right now. One family demanded for the patient to stay in the hospital even after being put on hospice and revoked hospice AND the DNR when we told them they had to go to a nursing home or home. It's ridiculous.
What is also really starting to piss me off is we have so many people in their 80s and 90s here for non-Covid issues, including several who are frequent admits and are basically vegetables. Trached, pretty much comatose. Families refuse to make them DNR. Families refuse to put them on hospice. We have three or four of those right now. What impact, if any, does this have on labor & delivery wards in hospitals? My wife is due any day now (Austin area), so I'm curious if we should expect to see anything such as staffing shortages when we arrive.

News outlets saying icu beds are 97% and that number only is only done to scare people, no other reason. If it were to inform people, they would report the details.

OK. So in the past, when ICU beds were this scarce, why weren't there reports on that?
Bc it's part of the hospital's business model and expected. Administrators need to get their head out of their asses and be proactive, especially after over a year of the same tune. I have a hard time believing that there wasn't a better protocol in place for a pandemic.

In March of 2020 (or close to it) city of Houston / Harris county opened a surge hospital for all the covid patients that would follow.
Forecasts today for end of August are to have the highest hospital icu beds at any time during the pandemic.
Why are cities/ counties (Harris) not opening a surge hospital?
So, does Dora and Sly Turner not care about the citizens or they don't think the threat is real?
