COVID is a RNA virus meaning it's genetic material isn't as stable as a DNA virus. Influenza and HIV are both RNA viruses as well. Because of the genetic instability, it mutates rapidly. Therefore, it will be around forever. Some variants will be more deadly than others. Just like influenza.
