Shingles vaccine and my overnight experience...

Got the second installment of the shingles vaccine yesterday.

About 11pm I'm in bed and get the worst case of shivers I think I've ever experienced. Could not get warm. Noticed I also had a headache. Then about 5am I was praying to the porcelain god.

Little worried about Covid 19. My Dr seems to think it's a reaction to the vaccine. I feel like a truck ran over me.

I am told to monitor my temp and stay home (like I have the energy to leave the house) to be on the safe side.

I would agree with this. I took the Shingtrix vaccine that requires two separate injections. It hit me hard on the first injection and then again on the second injection. Both times about 36 hours.

I've read and been told it is random on whether you are adversely affected and if you are with the first dose, it doesn't mean you will be with the second dose or vice versa. I think the vaccine side effects are worth it to avoid shingles from those I have known that had them.

Yes, my doctor recommended the Shingrix vaccine after my shingles cleared. I had shingles on my face and head... horrible experience. You can get shingles more than once.

You were extremely lucky. Don't ever assume future outbreaks will be mild.

Edit: if you got shingles after the vaccine then the vaccine likely tempered the outbreak.

I had the shingles last year and it was freaking miserable. No particular day was bad, but I felt generally like crap for about 3 months.

I agree, I felt lucky. "Uncomfortable at times" would be the worst description I could offer up. It was only on my left side and left back. I'm in my 40's so it may be better at a younger age as well, my grandfather had it when it was 99, and near his eye, and it seemed like it nearly killed him. My wife had it a couple years before me and it was also very mild for her, it's strange to me we both got it so young and both had very mild cases.

I planned on getting the vaccine in the future, the doctor who treated my shingles said wait until after I turn 50, but the description here is not something I expected. If that's possible I'm going to put it off I fear.

I had shingles a few years ago. It took about six weeks to feel completely back to normal. I've wondered if COVID and shingles are similar in anyway at all because the low energy, achy recovery sound similar.

My identical twin sister and I had chicken pox when we were 6. She developed shingles in her early 20's and I had it when I was 29. We are in the over 50 age group now and I am now not looking forward to the shingles vaccine! This thread is prompting me to ask my sister if she has gotten the vaccine yet and how it made her feel.

Don't let the stories here deter you from getting the vaccine. The 1-2 days isn't anything compared to what I've seen people suffer through with a full shingles outbreak. Also, only about 1 in 5 have symptoms from the vaccine. Most people I know were just fine - maybe local soreness at spot of injection. In my case I didn't know the vaccine could do that so it was a surprise. If you're prepared for what might be it makes a big difference.

I echo this as well. As I said, I felt poorly after both shots but mainly just rested and slept a lot for the weekend. From the people I have known that had shingles I would take the shot effects over the illness every time. My wife only felt bad with the second injection and most have no significant reaction at all. For the protection it gives, it is worth it.

Listen to those above. The vaccine will be nothing compared to shingles if you get it. I've seen people with moderate residual nerve pain for months after the weeks of severe pain.

For those of you who are curious about getting the vaccine. I will share my shingles experience.

Once finally diagnosed with shingles I was prescribed a narcotic to kill the pain. But they only gave me five days worth. On day five I called the dr to get more and they said I had to see the doctor again. I went back and basically begged the doctor for more narcotics. She graciously obliged. It was the only thing that allowed me to function. And when I say function, this was my day.

Get up. Take Tylenol with codeine so I could drive to work. Once at work do some stuff for a few hours then take my narcotic. Couldn't drive with that **** so had to be stuck for a while. About an hour after my narcotic I'd have to just basically play on my phone, because if I tried to do any real work I would most likely just be tooo confused and slurring my words (so meeting we're out).

Sober up. Work a little more than take some Tylenol with codeine to get me home. Lay in bed until it was time to take some oxy. I liked the oxy, a little too much, but it was the only way I could sleep. I remember laying awake at night thinking I can't move my arms and legs (but I don't care cause I feel great).

The alternative to all of these pain killers was to truly live in agony where even the breeze from the ceiling fan made my skin feel like it was being burned.

Get the vaccine.

I had shingles (back & side) during a summer session at A&M after my junior year. I was 21. I initially thought I had gotten into poison ivy so went to the quack shack for a steroid shot (the only way I could ever get over it). My jaw hit the floor when the doc told me it was shingles. The initial itch turned to a burn shortly after - and burn it did.

...lots of fun walking across campus (and sitting in class) in June with that stuff.

I got shingles when I was 28ish due to stress. Luckily I was dating a PA student that liked to play guess the diagnosis. When I told her it felt like razor blades everywhere my shirt touched and that the seatbelt was going to cut my neck and shoulder off she said "I bet it's shingles". Went to a minute clinic on the second or third day and got Valtrex (I think it was). The pain eventually spread to my legs as well but ten days on that medicine and I was nearly fully recovered. I was very lucky. I never got any rashes, just the burning, searing skin sensation.

Got the vaccine had no issue. For people that are unclear the current vaccine iirc shingrix is considered to be far superior than the prior vaccine. If your Dr in the past recommended not getting the vaccine it may have been the old vaccine which was considered to be not good.

It's the vaccine, those symptoms are pretty common with Shingrix (more common with the first dose).

And for those asking yes, there is still benefit even if you've already had shingles before. It can prevent or blunt future outbreaks.

I felt bad after the second shot too. Ended up going to bed early and sleeping it off. Compared to getting the shingles like my FIL it was a walk in the park. 24 hours and it was over.

I got shingles at 30. I got really, really lucky. Mine just felt like knives stabbing me every time I moved but i never developed any rashes. My tshirt stung every time it touched me and it spread to the inseam of my legs. Wearing a seatbelt was probably the worst thing since it rubs as you drive and was just burning through my shoulder. I started getting the pain and couldn't figure out what was wrong but my gf at the time was in PA school and loved to try to diagnose things based on symptoms. She told me it sounded like shingles. Went to the doctor the next day and it was shingles. Got a script for Valtrex I think it was. 7 days later and it was much better.

I've had both rounds of the vaccine. Both times got the chills and a mild fever. Back to feeling normal within 36 hours. If it prevents me from getting a full blown case of shingles, it was well worth it!

Spouse and I both had vaccine. No issues on first shot with either of us. Second shot caused spouse to feel awful for 24 hours. I had no reaction whatsoever.
