I watched the press conference and Abbott specifically mentioned throughout his discussions with business leaders on how they could safely re-open as part of the process to re-opening. He specifically mentioned that bar owners needed to approach his administration with some ideas for how they could safely open before he could advise it.
I am a person who goes to a gym 5-6 days a week and have been sorely missing it. When the outbreak was getting serious, I kept doing my workouts. I found it to be the most anxious activity of anything I did. I tried to wipe down my barbell before using, but then I realized all the plates I was handling would need to be wiped as well as I kept taking those on and off. Also, lifting causes people to breathe heavily, spit, grunt and do lots of things that made me uncomfortable. I wish they would require wearing a mask in the weight lifting area since it's not a true aerobic activity. Finally, social distancing seemed almost impossible when doing anything with dumbells, because all of the bros love to line up in front of the dumb bells for their exercises in the mirror. It was impossible to steer clear of people while lifting to go get the dumbells i needed for certain exercises. I would typically take them to another area of the gym to steer clear of people, but I found it troublesome.
I don't see how gloves help at all. I don't see a single mechanism that gloves can do to prevent infection. The minute I wipe snot out of my nose with my glove or block a cough my glove is pointless. At least a mask would physically block me from doing things like that.
I also swim a regularly and I felt pretty safe doing that. I've read that the chlorinated water kills CV. As long as it's one person to a lane, I never felt there was much opportunity to get infected.
Closing the locker room and water fountains seems like a good idea. I made sure to pack all my stuff so I wouldn't need to do that anyways.
A mask is pretty detrimental to heavy lifting. One needs to be able to breath fully, especially since most heavy barbell lifters use the Valsalva maneuver to brace their core. I think you were probably being unnecessarily anxious honestly. While strength training may not be a traditional "aerobic" activity, breathing is vital and masks restrict that. Heck, many feel that a good session of 3 sets of 5 reps of full ROM low bar back squats at about 80% ones estimate 1 rep max gives one more in terms of aerobic capacity while training than doing HIIT. Though I do short HIIT type training once to twice a week to increase my stamina during heavy lifts, but I digress.
Agree on the gloves. Also, there's now debate among gyms that the gloves weren't supposed to be on the list and it was a mistake that was supposed to apply to staff while cleaning, which is supposed to happen a number of times a day. Also, chalk. I started thinking about this while doing dead lifts yesterday. Chalk is used to dry out the hand so one isn't sweaty and will have a tight grip on the bar, especially under heavy loads. I wonder if chalk, because on that, wouldn't automatically kill viruses by drying them out. I have no idea. Anyone who may can chime in. One interesting result of using chalk, I won't touch my face as I do not want chalk to get in my eyes, nose or near them. And that was a major reason cited in the past couple of month on why we should wear masks and gloves. To remind us NOT to touch our faces. The owner and I agree, we will over look the glove thing, other then I will wear them if I clean. Still, we will be on people's butt a lot more now to wipe off and re-rack etc. I won't require that the plates be wiped down. Just the pads and seats, handles etc.
Look, I think they know that social distancing is damn near impossible at a gym with free weights. While they will say what they need to say, the reality is, there is no way to realistically keep a gym truly that clean and to limit the potential to spread things where people train very hard. You have to breath, in ways that are similar to the power a sneeze has if you are lifting heavy. Granted, a guy doing a 300lbs plus squat or 400lbs deadlift or a 300lbs power clean will get socially distanced, but not because of Covid, but for more pressing safety issues like not having that weight dropped on them. Most of the measures are to put people at ease. Nothing molre. We all should have been wiping equipment down way before Covid-19. Now maybe the idiots who didn't will start. If they don't, I'll be having a word with them.
