Does Abbot have the authority to issue lockdown/SIP in certain counties?

For example, lockdown Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, Harris, Fort Bend, Travis, etc, but then leave other counties open?

I have to admit I'm a little depressed this wasn't a press conference to announce we were seceding from the Union like in Daniel Da Cruz's book "The Ayes of Texas"

That's a blast from the past.

As for the numbers, he offered a good explanation for the difference in official numbers and numbers being reported on sites like John Hopkins.
I definitely want to live in a world where we attach invisible laser cannons to the Battleship Texas, then blow up the Houston Ship Channel and attack the Russians with said battleship riding the crest of a tidal wave. I can't believe this movie never got made.

The longer we put it off, the more we pay later. Hope I'm wrong.

Major metro areas like SA, Houston, and DFW probably shouldn't put it off any longer. They're at the biggest disadvantages fundamentally.

Other areas can afford to wait and see how the pseudo-lockdown is working.
I would bet the cities were waiting on what the Gov did first, now that they know he's kicked it to them- i could see the major cities moving to shelter in place on Monday

You might be right, but that's piss-poor leadership.

Much like "all politics are local," the impact of coronavirus is local. The healthcare resources being used are local, the characteristics of the community in terms of population density and related issues, and the number of infections are local.

States waiting on the feds, counties waiting on states, and cities waiting on counties has never made sense.

The most egregious example of this is NYC. They needed to move hard and fast a long time before they did.

I'm hopeful that our major metros fare much better due to better fundamentals in terms of populations density and dependence on public transportation.

Going out where?

For the vast majority of people I know, a shelter in place order wouldn't really change much. Most everyone is WFH if working at all, schools are closed, and all entertainment options are closed.

Right! People wanting full shutdown to keep people from "running around" everywhere. Have you been on the roads lately?

Man around me in Bell County it has been pretty quiet. I drove from Lake Belton to Freebirds on 31st street in Temple today, which is about a 15 minute drive that goes over I35, and I have not seen the roads that dead in years. Maybe ever.

I hate the guy but in his defense he has been outspoken about supporting local businesses, and maybe a city wide shelter in place could affect his side deal bribes.

Yep, that is what you got at this this point. Governor Abbott should take control of the Texas Medical Center however. Call it a special emergency zone or whatever he needs to do.

I just feel like every step along the way we've been surprised that people take things one step less seriously than they should... 6 feet separation is now the "norm", but you go out and you see plenty of examples of people not adhering to it even with plenty of space to do so.

That's the only reason I think a shelter-in-place would have been smarter. You tell people stay 10 feet away, they'll stay 6...

You tell people "stay inside unless they have to go out", many will still go about their normal business. You tell people "shelter-in-place", they'll stay inside unless they have to go out.

I live in San Antonio, close enough to a 4-lane road that we can hear the traffic when it's busy. Usually, on Friday and Saturday nights it's been busy. Last two nights, after 10:00 or so, virtually nothing. It's almost eerie. I don't remember it being this quiet on Christmas Eve.

Yeah i actually have and I was amazed at how busy things still are

People are still going to personal trainers, still outside playing sports, hanging out in groups at the park, getting their hair/facial hair cut, home improvement stores are still busy, etc..

Well, I'll agree on most of that. Don't know about the trainers (where would that occur, at a park?) but I have see people outside at parks and playing ball. That seems OK. Home improvement stores would stay open regardless I believe (contractors/repairmen would need it open at a minimum). And I gotta get a haircut in the next week or so, so I would hope they stay open.

I live in Arlington at the Highlands which is the big entertainment/shopping eating community and next to Costo and just off of I 20. When I step outside I hear birds singing, not the muted rush of traffic. The Highlands itself is deserted, even with to go and delivery allowed. Arbrook which is theback road to the compex and the big mall usually has constant traffic. When walking the dog today I was able to go a minute or two beween even seeing a car and one of those was a police car.

If Houston is acting crazy, then that is on Houston.

Your significant other may have to be the one cutting your hair. Hope the two of you have been on good terms lately. Never good to have a spouse angry at you, holding some scissors about to cut your hair.

Because they are incompetent, corrupt, greedy, and on the take. Yes, state officials are as well, but more people are watching them. I don't want people in Montgomery County - who think that BFE dinosaur parks and are a good idea and that "fill and build" doesn't cause flooding - to be handling a pandemic in my back yard.

I read it as the most everyone being in reference to the vast majority of people he knows. The same is true for me - I know very few people who can't do their jobs remotely.

If a "shelter in place" order does happen, you can always use your forced time at home to work on your reading comprehension.
