I would only try in extreme emergency .....what is it that you want to accomplish ? Just to use the gas up? If so Then maybe .5 to 1 gal to a new full tank of gas.

Not relevant to this issue but for laughs back in 1970 my parents moved from Vermont to New Jersey and had a Saab, which had a 2-cycle engine.

When new in town, my mother went to get gas and told the attendant to put oil in the gas tank and he was totally confused and would not do it. She had to get out and insist that MY HUSBAND TOLD ME YOU HAVE TO PUT OIL IN THE GAS TANK and the guy went through visible changes since he had never had to do that to a car before.

Moral of the story, drive your lawn mower or find a very old Saab.

I'm in a small town. The mob panic seems to be worse here.

Went out to grab lunch and fill up in northwest Austin and there were three gas stations without gas. Had to go down the road a bit to find any. Then those stations had long lines.

Interesting. That would have confused the hell out of me.

Lack of oil coming out of the gulf coast is starving refineries that are still online. This should make supply of oil more available for those refineries.

People are acting like the oil pumped out of the ground yesterday gets refined today, and goes into their gas tank tomorrow. I'm no petroleum expert or anything, but I'd bet there's some cushion built into the system here and there.

Your right, it's not instant. And we are close to a week since the refineries and pipelines were shut down, that's probably about all the padding there is in the process. Most companies don't like to have millions tied up in inventory if they can help it.

San Antonio going stupid. Gas station next to my office had police directing traffic. One of my folks had to go to 6 different stations to find gas. Crazy

My motorcycle has the same engine as my weedeater so I think the ratio is 3:2.

Coworker here in DFW pulled one of the bags off the "closed" pumps and it pumped easily and quickly and the attendant ran out screaming "you can't have that gas!". Why would they bag them if they still had fuel?

Maybe the fuel storage tank flooded?

If the tank gets low you may be drawing water out of the tank instead of Gas?

Or they bagged it to save gas for after the panic.

There may understandably be some amount of short-term shortages but this is the same mob mentality as a run on a bank going broke.

Waited a hour behind 20+ cars in tiny Pipe Creek to top off truck and fill containers. Son is in SA and hasn't found anything near Live Oak to get him home to Bandera tonight. Bandera has been out since noon.

THIS is why there is a shortage. People topping off vehicles and filling up containers they probably don't need. I'm not blaming, I do the same thing. But it's the reason - news says "gas will run short", everyone runs out and buys more than they would have ever needed, gas runs short.

I'm not totally buying this is purely a demand/panic problem.

There are distribution issues, but most people never would have noticed any hiccup. This is primarily panic driven.
