It looks like there are plenty of boats.
It looks like there is plenty of help at the main evacuation center.

I am thinking of the elderly who may be trapped in rural areas. So maybe contacting a county agency to help?

Thoughts? I want to through my energy to the elderly and handicapped that are possibly still isolated . So I will pass on what I learn in the morning.

This is a great idea.

Fortunately, everyone is pitching in every way they can. Unfortunately, that makes it difficult to find somewhere to actually help.

Get to an area that flooded and receded and start the tear down. Not sexy work but manpower is neeeded. Bring hammer crow bar gloves and sheet rock saw if you have it.

I had 5 people I have never met in my life tearing my house apart today. I am thankful beyond words.

I am reading, willing, and able to help out. Do you know any groups organizing these kinds of efforts?

awesome, and yes, cleanup is the hardest part. Hard for anyone. Nearly impossible for the elderly, especially folks that are retired, their home was paid off, and they are fixed income... they cant afford servpro, the insurance wont pay much for cleanup, and they really need that kind of help.

from my other post:

Now that the flood has started to recede in most places, I have to point out from personal experience: The time your neighbors need help the most is in the cleanup.

disposing of destroyed property, taking out sheetrock and flooring, powerwashing and disinfecting, pulling down fences full of dead animals, trash and debris, all the things that can be done without a trade skill... those are the things that are the worst in a flood. Often worse than bugging out in the water itself. That is where people really need the most help.

It isnt glamorous, the cameras are gone, the heat and bugs and smell are terrible, the lifting is heavy and the footing slick, everything is covered in slime. There are sharp objects everywhere. There are likely snakes, raccoons, rats, freaked out animals everywhere if they are alive.

This is especially true if it was river water.... rising rain water isnt really that big of a deal, dry it quickly, just chunk the molded or warped stuff, air it out as quick as you can .. in river flood everything is covered in inches of the stickiest, nastiest slime you can imagine.

People will also need wells flushed and tanks replaced, septic systems replaced, gates and openers replaced, plumbing repairs if pier and beam, pool equipment replaced, electrical work, AC work, major structural, etc., and friends cant often help that, but if you have friends that flooded, then the biggest help you can give them is also the least pleasant. Help them clean up.

Also, FYI, flood insurance wont cover car parts, business property (only $2500 total), wells, septic, fences, gates, or any of a number of other things. Not sure why, you cant live without these things in a rural property, but that is the way it is.

Sorry for not getting back quicker.

There are no groups. This is neighbor helping neighbors stuff. People just need to get in help.

If you are looking for anyplace to start, my neighborhood has 100+ homes needing help. It called Coles crossing in Cypress. Sherwood Manor is the worst street. We do have AC and looting is not a problem. so that's going for you and you can meet the poster know as Daddy. There are 100 of neighborhoods like mine or way worse. I would drive in and start asking were the help is needed. No check in required

Thanks for wanting to help.

Howdy! I'm an aggie and I want also to help as volunteer in Houston with cleaning, etc., mainly on weekends, so I won't miss classes. It would be great if I can join someone from CS/B who is helping there. I don't have a car and well... I'm a girl, so not too strong. But I want to help. My email: lacrizza@gmail.com. Kate

I'll keep posting this so more people see it, but all 6 Second Baptist locations are coordinating remediation/tear down efforts. You can sign up here, depending on which campus you're closest to. Home Remediation/Cleanup

Group I was with got through 5 homes in old Katy today. I'm taking another crew out tomorrow morning.

This right here. That's what I did today, drove to Dickinson with a bunch of tools and water and just started helping. It'll be all ripping out carpet and drywall.

Registered in the Central Baptist site - if it takes 48 hours to respond, then it might not get back to me tomorrow (Sat). NoahAg/lacrizza - I am willing to bring in tools/supplies from BCS to the NW side Saturday morning and able to help. dav_gigem at hotmail dot com.

I'm headed down to Houston from BCS now and was looking to help right away. Looks like most of the websites take some time to hear back. Have some small hand tools and will help however I can. K Howe 05 at Yahoo dot com.

For those looking to help, grabbing some tools and driving through an area that flooded you are almost sure to find groups working that you can just jump in and help with. For a more organized approach, most of the active churches either have, or will soon have organized systems for forming teams and assigning locations. here are a few of the link pages. Did some work with some HFBC crews yesterday and will probably be leading another few teams this weekend.
