Ways to Help

IMPORTANT NOTE: Before you donate to a charity, make sure you know where your aid is going. The Center for International Disaster Information recommends checking with a charity monitoring organization like GiveWell, Charity Navigator, Charity Watch, or the Better Business Bureau before donating.

Red Cross (www.redcross.org/)
Make donations at redcross.org, 1-800-RED-CROSS or text the word HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

Salvation Army (www.salvationarmyusa.org/)
Make a donation to the Harvey Fund by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY, mailing a check to The Salvation Army, PO BOX 1959, Atlanta, GA 30301 (please designate Hurricane Harvey on all checks), or through their website.

United Way (https://www.unitedwayhouston.org/flood/flood-donation)
Text UWFLOOD to 41444 to donate to the United Way Flood Relief Fund.

Donating Blood (southtexasblood.org/)
The blood supplies in Southeastern Texas' hospitals are low. They have less than one day's supply. According to the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center, O negative and O positive blood types are critically needed. You can make an appointment to donate by calling 210-731-5590 or you can make an appointment through their website.

SPCA of Texas (www.spca.org/news_hurricane-harvey)
Financial donations can be made at www.spca.org/give or make an in-kind donation: the supplies most needed are cat litter, litter boxes, towels, blankets, large wire crates, toys, treats, pet beds, newspaper and gas gift cards. In-kind donations can be brought to the SPCA of Texas' Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center in Dallas or the SPCA of Texas' Russell H. Perry Animal Care Center in McKinney.

Bread of Life, Inc. (http://www.breadoflifeinc.org/hurricane-harvey/)
Donations will assist in their mission to help the homeless and other families in need.

Counseling Information

Texas A&M Student Counseling Service

The Student Counseling Service will be offering two opportunities for students to receive some support and assistance related to the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey. Students may be impacted in a number of ways: concerned about relatives impacted by Harvey; dealing with losses as the result of Harvey; uncertainty about what further effects this will have; and other worries.

On Wednesday, August 30th and Thursday, August 31st from 6:00pm to 7:00pm, students may join an open group to receive support. We will discuss the ways people are impacted by natural disasters like Harvey and how to adaptively cope with those effects. If students are needing further support, we will be able to arrange for that support during or following these meetings.

These will take place at the Student Services at White Creek Complex. You can find a map to our location here: http://sswc.tamu.edu/maps/. Please come to our reception building (0067) and we will direct you to these group locations.

For those in dfw/central/east Texas -- donate blood at Carter bloodcare. Www.carterbloodcare.org.

Carter has shipped over 1000 units and is continuing to ship blood south and needs help to meet the local needs and keep supplying their neighbors.

Austin Texas can give to we are blood: https://weareblood.org

GulfCoast operates out of Houston, not sure how many drives they are operating. They do run drives and a donor center in B/CS.

Not sure where to put this, but people that are still stuck in the Houston area can coordinate their own rescue through this volunteer site:

I know that there has been a list of relief items posted. However, I also know that lots of people have had much if not all of their furniture damaged and will need to replace it. That said, I have a surplus couch that someone could use at least on an interim basis. This was a very expensive couch and well built. The seat cushions have some minor wear spots, but could be easily recovered for long term use unless someone wanted to use it until able to buy a new one.

The only problem is I live in Waxahachie and I have no idea how and when I could get this to someone to use. If there is anyone planning to haul furniture donations to the flooded areas please call me. I understand that it may be a week or two before the need for use of these type of items could be determined, but if anyone knows of an effort to provide furniture to those in need, please contact me, I had planned to donate this to Soul Harbor, but I will hold on to it for at least a week or two (Souls Harbor has had a surplus of couches is the reason it has not already been donated, but this catastrophe may have changed that).

If there is already an effort underway it would be best for me to work with that effort due to my recenthealth issues. Otherwise I would be more than happen to transport it myself.

I can be reached by text at 214-675-7948 or at the email address shown above..

Texas Monthly has published an excellent compilation of ways to help by donating time or money.

Quote:

even if you are far from the devastation, there are ways to contribute. There are organizations that need supportnow more than everthat will ensure that people impacted by the storm have the resources they need to keep their lives functioning. Here's a list of some of them, and what they'll be doing to help:

Their compilation is broken into sections:

  • How to help kids
  • How to help animals
  • How to help people with medical needs
  • How to provide food
  • How to help the homeless
  • How to help famers
  • How to help those displaced

It's very well done, and they appear to be adding to it. You can check it out at http://www.texasmonthly.com/the-daily-post/ways-can-help-people-hurricane-harvey/.

100% of proceeds directly to local victims impacted by Harvey. Funds go through NBRI (Christian based non profit). We have a significant volunteer group as well who are meeting immediate needs. Many devastated homes and people with immediate needs.

The Wh30p! Houston Club is currently coordinating volunteer efforts for Aggie families that are in need of help with demo, cleaning, laundry, etc.

If you are interested in volunteering to help them, you can follow along on their Facebook group. I will start a separate thread, but wanted to include the link to their group on this consolidated thread.

I'm an Aggie psychologist in private practice in Houston, and I would like to donate my current open counseling slots to Aggies affected by Harvey. ~6 slots. First come, first served. Limit 3 sessions each. I'll make more slots available as they open up.

Please email me at: Blane@YellowRoseCounseling.com

I know that, for many, this is a time for action (e.g., clearing homes, taking inventory, making arrangements). But after these tasks are completed, the weight of much of this may come bearing down, and that's when the counseling may be helpful.

I hope you'll help the right people get connected with this.

Thoughts, prayers, and help,
