Eh...Local authorities can only do so much.

FEMA can get people out of shelters and in hotels and temp housing. They're important in making the transition from first response to recovery.

But I do get what you're saying. Our local folks have been absolutely outstanding.
Local LEOs need to be shooting looters and anyone with a pickup with a magnetic sign declaring they are "contractors". I heard so many horror stories about minorities and elderly getting ripped off when I worked Rita and Ike, especially Rita.

It's clear from 518 to Alvin from my understanding. Not sure beyond that.

I might add to that by saying if you don't have flood insurance, file for disaster assistance with FEMA immediately. They are going to be swamped. Also, if you lost power, clean out the fridge and freezer asap. Once meat/fish spoils, you might as throw the fridge away....you almost never get the smell out.

I worked Rita and started in south Port Arthur. I had to stay in Winnie because that was the closest RV spot I could find. PA was under mandatory evacuation but at the time, they thought Rita was coming in at Galveston. People thought they would only be out until the storm passed them to the south....3 or 4 days. It turned and took all power and it was a couple of weeks before it was restored. I inspected so many homes where people had tried to remove the smell from a fridge using bleach, lemon juice, charcoal, baking soda.....you name it. Some would brag that they had removed it all, but not having to smell it 24/7, I could still smell it. Just didn't have the heart to tell them.

Another big FYI;
After Ike, I heard that typical home insurance will allow a claim up to $500 worth of spoiled food. I called, I asked, I got $500. My parents called, they got $1000, since they had two fridges.

I had no idea it was on my home insurance, but low and behold. Give it a shot if you lost power. It's costly to replenish an entire fridge.

Cross-posted from Politics board, I am so proud to be an American, a Texan, and a Houstonian right now.

I was so sick of the media narrative of divisiveness.... showing the bottom 1% of society (on all sides) and pretending that they are representative of the whole country.

The people and volunteers of Houston, TX (and everyone that came from out of town) have restored my faith in humanity, and I saw it first hand. No one cared about race, political leanings, sexual orientation, or any other meaningless difference that we may have. Humans helping humans... so much so that volunteers were being turned away in some instances.

This feeling may disappear for some of you in a couple weeks or months, but I beg you to fight it. Don't ever let the media determine how YOU feel. Republican or Democrat, Gay or Straight, Black, White, Hispanic, whatever... we are all together.

We were talking about this tonight. It's a shame it took a disaster, but you can feel the togetherness of this city, and not just in the volunteers and extremely effected areas. I have talked so many friends who said they got to know their neighbors for the first time ever during the past few days.

While we were talking the neighborhood in the heights, perfect strangers just wanted to stop and talk. This sense of community is incredible and I hope it can stick to some effect.
And for the record, this is not how establishment politicians and media want it. They want the idea of dependence on gov't promoted to preserve their own power, that has become so outrageously large and out of control.

I, too, and so proud to see what I'm seeing. Hope is being restored. Keep the idea strong.

Looks like Lindner just bought his house last October.

Thoughts and prayers with him and his family. He's done an outstanding job at evaluating our flooding situation and keeping us informed.

Maybe Amazon.com? A quick search shows some to be available for delivery by Friday or early next week (with Prime).

FYI, There is a Jeff Lindner that got a meteorology degree and is class of 2004. So, he is likely an Aggie. Heard he lives in Lakes On Eldridge North (LOEN). If so, his house should be fine as no one that I know of has water in their house. Streets are flooded but no houses. I live in LOEN. We can't get out but have never lost power, water, sewage or internet. Jeff has been the consummate professional throughout this whole thing. Heard him doing a phone interview at 2am. Does the guy sleep ?

Home Depot has the commercial ones for rent, pretty reasonable and, hopefully, you never need it again.
