We have had flooding as far inland as La Grange. All of South East Texas has been saturated. Completely.

Did these reporters think that people evacuating would save the homes? The actual impact of lost lives has been very minimal given the unbelievable magnitude of this storm. I'd say they've handled it very well vs directing people to drive into roads that were going to quickly fill with water

exactly.. most (if not all) of the confirmed deaths have been in cars. Sending thousands\millions onto the roadways would have been much much worse.

If you come, can you post an update on the Amish guys? We passed them just before the 6/290 interchange. Wondering if they continued on to 290.

Agreed. If I'm not mistaken, the majority of casualties so far have been stranded motorists.

Exactly. I'm probably about as far right as you can be and I absolutely agree with this. Questioning decisions made from a literal act of god where 3-4 feet of rain dropped on an area the size of Maryland in a 1000 year flood is simply insane. Nothing we have is engineered for this and there is no administrative decision that could have been done to prevent this kind of widespread destruction, devastation, and human displacement. This is an unprecedented event that no one could have predicted.

The media really needs to realize their place and stop politicizing every single damn thing.
Accepting many weather people did predict this kind of rain. People just didn't believe them.

The models somewhat did, but they were not in agreement. The ECMWF did not have it dropping 40"+ on Houston.

Also, are you seriously suggesting they could have done something for a 1000 year flood? Are you this delusional? Maybe they could have re-organized evacuations into zones for flooding potential, but by the time the storm was forming, it was too late to do that. At that point, all they could do was try and react to the coming onslaught.

With all due respect, the forecast models were pegging this rain event as early as last Tuesday. They had three days they could have gotten people out of at least the low lying areas. Not talking about evacuating the entire Harris County but if it flooded in the Tax Day floods, it was a lock to flood this time around. Instead, those people have been getting free helicopter rides if they stuck around.

No one stopped people from leaving. If you wanted to leave you were welcome to leave.

Agreed that no one prevented people from leaving. But you had the governor telling people in low lying areas to get out, and the mayor telling them that the local folks knew best and for them to stay put.

I think a big part of that equation is that a good portion of the city decided that the storm had been overblown and were going to stay where they were. Hell, I'd be very curious if they did a poll of people who were rescued from flooded cars, how many of them were out at a bar watching the fight. I was astounded at how many places were open and the number of people who were willing to go out and pay money to watch a fight with rain baring down on the city. I think there's going to need to be some kind of discussion amongst media members on how they report on these things. Constantly making every storm the end of days to get ratings is going to result in people not buying it and that was a big part of all of this as well.

A couple things:

First, I wouldn't put any stake into current fatality totals. As of now, yes, most will be from cars driving into deep water, some from family checking on other family. As the water recedes I'm sure more will pop up in cars who have been completely submerged and the recovery efforts will begin when we start going house to house and I'm afraid to think of what those numbers could be.

Second, it's pretty short sighted to say all this has been handled as well as possible. Now I agree now isn't the time for the POS reporters to be harping on it, but a lot can be learned. Ordering mandatory evacuations 3 days and 30" into this is about as worse case as it gets....

The only thing that should have been done was a mandatory curfew Saturday night. There still would have been a few idiots going to friends' houses for the fight, but it would have kept the bars and restaurants from opening. However, if the forecast had busted Turner would have been run out of town by the businessmen afterwards. There was really no good option.

True, but don't forget how highly uncertain the models were leading up to landfall. Not to mention how quickly Harvey strengthened prior to landfall. This storm is unprecedented.

Regardless, now is not the time to be throwing blame around. There are still many stranded with more to come, and the news outlets would be doing best to keep the public informed of current conditions.

Allison was one of the worst natural disasters to hit the country, but they are expecting a few gauges to break national rainfall records.

Why not say if your home flooded in Allison or the floods the last 2 years get out, if not ride it out. Time to do this would have been Wednesday or Thursday given the rain forecast and projections. Roads weren't impassable until Saturday night. Would have been way less rescues.

How about if your home flooded previously you take it upon yourself to get out? I know lots of people who did that. They didn't need anyone to tell them.

Oof. Latest models show another system developing in the Gulf and coming north to Texas (read: more rain). Plus that other disturbance in the Atlantic.

And the 5-day forecast rain totals starting Saturday morning (9/2).

I have another lakes on Eldridge rescue request. Aunt and uncle are at 5614 Heather Run, 2 adults and 2 dogs. My parents, brother, and pets are still stranded at 5607 Peninsula park in lakes on Eldridge as well. I am driving and therefore may not see your response. Please call my cell phone 713-806-6013 if you are able to assist in any way.

I have lots of family and friends in and around Houston, I have every right to be part of this thread.

And is this storm much worse than Allison? Allison dropped 3-4' of rain didn't it? So Harvey is not entirely unprecedented. Not really sure which is worse, Harvey or Allison (Allison was 32 trillion gallons), but they are on the same level when compared to typical hurricanes, so we know it can happen.

https://www.hcfcd.org/media/1351/ts-allison_pubreportenglish.pdf

Harvey is much, much worse than Allison in every way. It's not even a debate.
Why are you so quick to say that? Allison totally devastated Houston, with similar amounts of rainfall you are seeing right now.. so it's silly to say it's not even a debate. Greens bayou got 28" in about 12 hours.

They are concentrated in slightly different areas of Houston, but, like I said above, Allison dumped 32 trillion gallons, and flooded 73,000 homes in Harris county.

Now harvey has the hurricane aspect in rockport and corpus, but I'm just talking rain fall effects in Houston. harvey is not unprecedented in that regard.

I think the sting of Rita has a huge influence on decisions to evacuate.. for the authorities giving the orders as well as residents taking them.

maybe take a break for a week while people who still live in Houston and are fighting through the ongoing disaster try and figure it all out

Update on twin lakes, loe, they have high water rescue vehicles staging on Eldridge south of tanner and there are a few rescue boats operating. Every house we saw south of the Eldridge neighborhood enterances had water intrusion. The current picked up about 30 minutes ago so it's no longer safe to walk in or take unpowered boats in and fill them with people. We are heading out because the powered boat is working down on clay. Tanner is impassible north of the subdivision except for high clearance vehicles.

Please, end the discussion. Quit quoting and commenting on harvey vs allison posts.
