i thought the uncontrolled spillways were at different locations? if not, disregard
i am trying to think, but maybe it is clay road that becomes the spillway.

those aren't the spillways. Those are the release gates. The spillways are a sort of emergency level control weir.
Well, I don't know then.
"The Addicks Reservoir spillway is located at, 294725.99N 953724.04W, and releases the remainder of Bear Creek just north of Buffalo Bayou."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Addicks_Reservoir

"The Barker Reservoir spillway is located at 294610.86N 953847.09W."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barker_Reservoir

Those are the locations I plotted.

Not exactly.

The input to the reservoir is larger than their release. It is going to flood on the backside of these ponds. They are trying to keep the levels from going uncontrolled over the dam spillways.
it is a simple volume balance, but having a value in the output component of the accounting isn't what would cause the flooding. This is how it is being reported incorrectly. It needs to be reported that releasing water from the reservoir doesn't eliminate the risk of flooding upstream.

That is how ch. 2 reported it. Cdub heard incorrectly

Addicks contolled release goes under i10 near eldridge. The uncontrolled is the NE corner and it would flood towards bw8 and then south to Buffalo bayou

i think the spillway for Barker is the SW corner down south of the Canyon Gate subdivision. Looking at Google Maps, looks like that portion of the dam is concrete capped which is what typical emergency spillways look like.

Thoughts on driving from Austin to Oak Forest leaving in the next 20 minutes? Roads look mostly clear and the weather gives a nice break right now

The "spillways" are simply the ends of the dam.

There are no official emergency spillways for these.

looking at the map, i think you're right, emergency spillway starts at Clay and runs to the north end of the dam

Check every single traffic map you can. Waze, Google, DriveTexas.org.

I think the streets in OF are clear enough to drive now, but I'm not sure how 290 is into town.

These portions of the dam are lower than the rest of it though, right? Not by much?

Just visually inspected Buffalo Bayou at Eleanor Tinsley park. It's down about 4 feet from yesterday morning.

if you look at the elevation maps, water would spill out of clay only after all of the neighborhoods behind the reservoir flood.

These portions? Not sure exactly what you mean.

If you mean the ends of the damn, I'm guessing that the ends of the damn are not as high as where the release gates are.

I'm not in Houston but I have family that is trying to fly out of Bush on Thursday, any idea if that is looking like a possibility still?

I read Hobby is def closed until Wednesday.
Pahdz

Yeah that's what I mean, before water would breach the rest of the dam (or reach a certain other elevation) water would flow over these concrete capped ends of the dam. Sorry not an engineer but a lot of things were thrown around last night and just making sure I understood it all correctly.

speaking of Hobby, were those really runways under water in some of those pictures, and how are we thinking those hold up after being under water for so long? wondering if repairs will be needing causing further delays.

i assume that is why this area has a concrete top, for erosion. same for the other end near where star furniture is on IH10..

The lack of central coordination by the city is really frustrating for people trying to help. We called the main number last night and the lady was clueless. We're clear with work and ready to bring supplies & do S&R with a boat, but we have literally no way to get information other than piecing it together from internet sources.

Really frustrating. Can't imagine what the folks in Houston are experiencing.

I'm stuck in Dallas for work at our backup site. Does anyone know if the Northwest Transit Center area flooded? I live near there inside the loop and haven't heard from my neighbors if we took on water.

Next door neighbor said the water got as high as 4" in the house last night, but has since receded and no more water in the house.

I want to go home and start the cleanup in my house, but now I'm stuck over at my moms house and can't get out of her neighborhood. Really wishing I had a lifted truck right now.

are you near rutherglenn west of hillcroft?

I have a friend on Wigton. No water in the house, street flooding only. He didn't think anyone in their vacinity had water in the house.

We just noped the **** out of Grand Lakes this morning. Water in the streets didn't go all the way down overnight and rose quickly with the new rain that started at 4. I figured we should get out while we knew we could, even though we had to get creative to do it.

It was very difficult to go throgh all of my **** trying to decide what I for sure wanted to keep and what I was good with throwing away. Between that, moving everything else to high ground, and having to narrate a video of all of my possessions I'm emotionally exhausted.

Here's hoping all of those precautions are unnecessary. Owning two houses and still being homeless would suck ass.
Where exactly in Grand Lakes, if you don't mind?
