I live in this area, fortunately was close to I 10 and did not flood, but we knew when we moved in that we were in a floodplain.

The issue is, we never expected an 800 year flood to happen within a few years of our purchase of the home.

I'm not sure about the homes closest in, but I don't think we should prevent homes from being built if it's more than 500 year flood plain

So will someone come in and say it needs to be a 1000 year flood plain? Where is the line of reality and perspective? This is truly a once in an 800 year possibility

Just giving the perspective of the developers, and homeowners who knew the risk but just didn't think it would actually happen in Their lifetime

Glass half empty approach would point out that conditions were not right to make hurricane events the last 5-6 years due to freak luck, and that this type of situation will become more the norm.

I mean there's another system forming after Irma that is a no-joke threat to come across the gulf.

I totally agree that there is eventually a line where you say "that is so unlikely that it isn't worth considering as a 'risk'". I wasn't specifically talking about people flooded by the 800-1000 year storm, but more the places being built within a known storm retention reservoir below the elevation of the spillway...or being built immediately adjacent to or downstream of an emergency spillway. Flood plain elevations are one thing and elevations on flood control structures are another. I would wager that a very sizable percentage of the people in the Lakes of Eldridge area were never aware that they were buying a home that is in a planned emergency spillway area for a flood control reservoir. Those areas may well have been outside of the 500 year flood plain too, so nobody was required to tell them anything. But the corps built those dams anticipating growth and increasing development and the structural elevations and locations are there for a reason as part of the design. Just because the area isn't in a 100 or 500 year flood plain doesn't mean they are devoid of a flood hazard; and I believe we need to make sure that in future situations the developer can be held accountable if they aren't informing people of those potential hazards.

Some of that boggles my mind though that people don't understand basic things. Some of the houses on Barker Cypress, you literally drive over the dam and then pull into the neighborhood. How could you possibly not know that you were in a flood plain? I understand that some people might not have understood what these dams are for and how they work, (as evidenced by all of the news anchors in town) but I just don't understand how they don't. But when I first moved into apartments right next to the dams, it was one of the first things I did so I understood what was going on. And 6 months later, Highway 6 was underwater for a month.

i used to live in a house whose backyard was the addicks reservoir. and my current apartment (the ground floor of which is now flooded) is on the edge of barker. the reason i rented the place is for the view and quiet space behind me.

i'll be honest, i always had the impression in my mind that living right next to it (not in it, mind you) was a safe place to be. because i never really considered the possibility of the reservoir filling up as it did last year and now. i wasn't aware of these elevation maps either that show how areas upstream and surrounding are impacted at various levels. sure that's my own ignorance, but unfortunately sometimes it takes events like these for people to learn.

Yeah, those houses are probably not in the 100 year flood plain though. So I would imagine if people asked if they flood, they were probably told that they were not in the 100 year flood plain...not that they are several feet below the spillway elevation of a structure built specifically to hold back flood water to protect other parts of town.

Southwest cancelled my parents flight tomorrow. Agent told my mom they canceled all flights through saturday, mainly because so many personnel just can't get to the airport apparently.

I got mt United flight rebooked arriving to a different airport. Gonna get there super early though cause I assume it will be insane

friend in lakes on eldridge just told me their management company just sent an e-mail letting them know there are alligators in their subdivision. you can't move around that neighborhood without a boat.

So.. for a third time, parents rebooked Spirit out of IAH for tomorrow. I knew HOU was a pipe dream, but I'm thinking IAH may be actually having flights by tomorrow. I hope so.

They booked the same flight that they were told 2 days ago was canceled.

Flying to LA out of Austin instead of Houston on Saturday after Southwest cancelled our flight.

Looking forward to the couple day "vacation" and escape the area for a little bit. A lot of work at my in-laws' house when we get back early next week.

Their reliability ratings are awful and they don't provide refunds unless you pay an additional fee.

I would not count on Spirit actually flying even though they are accepting a booking. They are far more likely to be the airline that takes your booking and $$$ while not delivering on the flight.

You and LostinLA, be informed before speculating like that. They are waiving all fees and fare differences into next week.




My parents already had their initial Spirit flight (booked 6 weeks ago) canceled and refunded. No reason to believe they wouldn't do the same for this one.

They let you change the date of your flight but they won't refund it, correct? So you can go to LA in a few weeks if you'd like.

floods are weird. I could have lived in my ranch house from 1913 to 2016 and never flooded. The house itself didnt even flood in 2016, but the water got over my berm into the barns and all. Yet since 2015 we have seen 2 100 year, one 500 year, and now one 800 year flood.

i bought on a river... but without hindsight, buying a house that never flooded since 1913 seemed like a pretty small risk.

that said, i would never have bought in a subdivision on the fill side or spill side of a man made reservoir, or if I just had to I would not be shocked or pissed if it gives.

then again, if you buy nowhere near any river or reservoir, and the lord dumps 60" of rain right on you, you are probably flooding anyway.

It is what it is.

My parents got a full refund for the flights they purchased 6 weeks ago. It was today, flying back on tuesday. They canceled the flight and refunded on tuesday, and at the time, this friday flight wasn't scheduled to happen. Now today, it apparently is. Still skeptical of any flight these next few days.. but we'll see.

It is what it is.

All this is true, but only in flat land areas.

I live downstream of a reservoir, but the creek that runs adjacent to he neighborhood drops about 900 feet over 10 miles, so we're not ever flooding from rain. Hell, my backyard is 7' lower than my front door, and then it drops another 10-20 away from my backyard.

Districts will not have to make up days due to Harvey. Commissioner of Education approved missed school days with TEA waivers.

I read teachers and admin will go back earlier in HISD
