The top four slots are Millwood, Padilla, McCarthy, and Tejeda. The fifth slot is an open competition during spring training, probably between Loe, Rupe, Koronka, and Volquez.

I think I might just drive to Arizona for a long spring training weekend. I need the fix. Bad.

West-

How do you think McCarthy is going to do as a full season starter? I'm cautiously optimistic based on what I've heard about his abilities.

TWO!

46 days until opening day for the Rangers April 2nd at LAA

52 days until the Home Opener with Boston

Lawdawg, I'd say cautious optimism fits my thoughts too.

While McCarthy certainly doesn't necessarily fit the bill as the protypical pitcher we expect to succeed in Arlington (extreme groundball, lefthanded, or both), he's just a flat awesome talent. I get excited when I consider the fact that he was the top pitching prospect in all of baseball not long ago. Certainly, Chicago thought that he'd lost some of his luster, but based on some of the stories and rumors that I heard, I think that had more to do with McCarthy not getting along with Kenny Williams than it did with his on-field talents. I think that he's got the potential down the road to be an All-Star and a front-of-the-rotation anchor.

As for this year, Jamey Newberg predicted a combined 27 wins out of Tejeda and McCarthy as one of his key events that he thinks will propel the Rangers to a division title. That may seem like a lot, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect 13-14 wins out of them over a full season.

Newberg also proved why he is a writer and not an analyst.

He expects 32 wins out of Millwood and Padilla, and another 27 out of McCarthy and Tejeda.

Ignoring that the chances of two pseudo-rookies are going to put up 85% of the win total as the top 2 in your rotation, to think that Millwood and Padilla will not only duplicate their performances of last year, but IMPROVE upon them is simply wishful thinking. Padilla had a career year, and Newberg expects him to get BETTER?

Add to that he goes on to make the assumption that the bullpen will win as many games this year as in the last 3 years -- discounting the fact that as quality of the starting pitching staff increases, the chances of the bullpen getting wins decreases.

Padilla's career best win total is 15.
Millwood's career best win total is 19.

If both of those players duplicated their CAREER years, they'd get 34 wins combined.

Newberg expects 32.

Pass me some of what he is smoking.

Well then I'd say if Catalanotto puts up his first 40/40 season we'd be in good shape to win the division too.

just an FYI on the inside pitch scam. They only open the "crappy" seats. Last year I bought my tickets during the inside pitch time period and all that was available was like 3rd deck, last row ect. However 3 days later(this year March 2nd) you could get wayyyyyyyy better seats for the same price. Be careful before you buy crap seats that more will be available later in the week.

I think they do this offer because they know their die hard fans will buy seats no matter as long as they can goto opening day, so they try and unload the seats no one wants to them. Hicks can be a ***** like that...

Aggie Eric, is that right? I signed up for First Pitch so i was pumped what i got the email about being able to buy early. Is it not worth it? I wont be able to get decent seats?

If they do it like last year, he's right.

Just check when you pull tickets -- if you've got "bad" seats, then wait until regular onsale. I just assumed that was all that was left last year when I did the early First Pitch, but found out later I was wrong.

A lot of people complained about it last year though, so they may have changed it.

TODAY'S THE DAY!!!!

C.J. Wilson is filing reports from Surprise for the Newberg Report again this year, today he shares the feeling that we wish we all could feel too:
quote:
My annual stroll into the Surprise Sports Complex for the first time feels like the equivalent of a blessing from a holy person. I feel cleansed, renewed, and invigorated.

quote:
Suiting up into my grey pants for the first time in 2007 is a great feeling, kinda like being a little leaguer all over again. Christmas comes in February for me each year – size 13 running shoes and size 12 cleats await in my locker. I’ve always preferred really tight cleats when I pitch; it makes me feel more athletic, I guess.

I prefer starting on the road. It means the home opener is generally on Friday, so there is no reason to stop drinking....

Still waiting on mhayden et al on the tailgate question.

Umm, your Rangers suck. They will continue to suck with their owner and GM. They will suck this year, next year, and in the following 10 years. You are continually out-franchised by Oakland and the Angels. You have the 4th best management in your own division. Deal with it, and move on.

I would agree with you that Hicks sucks but, JD the GM is one of the best young GM's in MLB.
