Looks like Baylor could prove to be a big challenger in the Big 12 race this year. Aggies still need to get some consistent hitting or we may find ourselves being swept by Baylor.

No hornfans on this board tonight...wonder why???

It always happen...quirks in baseball. It's a long season, and tu always has a great team...if not great sportsmanship (read: reaction to losing the CWS last year). But they're still a great team...and we're no joke either.

This is no joke. I'll give tech fans credit for one thing, they're always here...win or lose.

You have no idea how badly that pained me to give tech credit for anything.

Don't start bashing Texas with comments like "they haven't seen any good hitting or pitching yet." They have played one of the most difficult schedules in the country. Sure, they've had some cupcakes here and there, but who hasn't? And they only had one loss in 22 games, coming into this weekend. They just happened to pick the wrong team to have a bad series against.

Baylor's pitchers appear to be the best Texas has faced so far, but the reason for Texas's troubles in this series is mostly that they had no consistent pitching of their own. The Horns did have 11 hits in today's game, so it's not like Baylor's guy overpowered them. But the Texas pitchers could not establish anything that lasted more than an inning or two. The Texas defense also had 7 errors in the series, which is highly unusual.

Baylor is playing very, very well right now, and they were obviously too much for Texas to handle this weekend. But it's one weekend. For both teams.

Some of you guys whine when we show up too much and now you whine when you THINK we don't show up at all.

Yes it was a tough weekend for Augie and the boys. But this isn't the first of his UT teams to start conference rather meekly. However, should we take 2/3 from the raiders next weekend in Austin, it will be the same record at that point that the 2002 team started conference play. The main thing is to be in the top 8 after the conference tournament...not after the first weekend of conference play. Although both is best.

Happy?

We'll put it to the test, before the polls come out tomorrow, since rankings mean so much to so few around here.

Given that Texas was the consensus #1 team before the weekend, and that a conference opponent handled them in three consecutive games:

Should Baylor be ranked ahead of Texas?
Where would you place these two teams in the poll?

They swept stanford and 2 out of 3 from arizona. To say they havent faced good pitching is one of the most ignorant comments i have ever heard.

but the real question is, when they fall from number 1, will augie and his team sit in the locker room crying about it and refuse to play any more games?

Texas' preseason schedule is a helluva lot tougher than ours and they had better success with it. Baylor just came out and kicked their butts, something we should have done to Tech but couldn't.

I said last week that I thought CS-Fullerton was the best team in the country, so let's not make this about rankings. I seriously doubt Texas is still the consensus #1. Why are you even bringing that up?

Is Baylor a better team than Texas? Right now, yes. Hard to argue against that. But Texas was #1, Baylor was #16. I doubt the Bears will be ranked ahead of Texas, nor should they be, considering their seasons as a whole.

As for A&M not playing any cupcakes, please tell me that you're either joking or that you really believe A&M is not that much better than Sam Houston State or Evansville or Jacksonville or UTSA.

And all this time I thought this was the board for Aggie baseball? Guess they need to change the name of the forum. It really is sad that some of you care more about what happened in Waco than what is going on with our team. If all you want to do is talk smack about the Longhorns, they have a board for that--it's called Rivalries. Instead, you want to post your smack here and have the moderators protect you from any Horns that get out of line.

agree with twk. there's a reason i don't go over to the Rivalries board...and i'd rather not see the baseball board become the same way.

WRONG!

The Horns had a good OC schedule but it was hardly tougher than what the Ags faced. t.u. had tough series against Stanford & Arizona (going 5-1 against them was most impressive) but home series against UNLV, Youngstown State, & Purdue is hardly a killer schedule. I'll give them credit in that they took care of business starting off 21-1.

A&M hardly had a soft schedule, playing only 9 of their first 21 games at Olsen Field (heck by the time they get back to Olsen it will be 9 out of 28 games). They played in tough tournaments facing quality programs such as Tennessee, Washington, USC, & Notre Dame in which they often had to face the #1 starter. A&M hardly faced a cupcake schedule. If you want ito see a weak schedule take a look at what most of the other Big XII schools have faced.

Baylor, by the way, had one of the toughest OC schedules of any team in the nation and struggled with it but it seem to have prepared them for conference play.

I think running smack is a waste of everyone's time, but I personally like to discuss the other Big XII teams' performances. I like to hear what horns have to say about their teams, as they have much more insight than we do. I know Baylor swept the horns, but I don't know why, and now I have a better idea thanks to bassale. If you don't want to read about the horns, just ignore the thread. Tough weekend for the horns, but they're still the team to beat in the Big XII. Having them drop three was a huge boost for us, as we're a game ahead of the horns right now, meaning if we can take care of business when we play Baylor, we can be right in the thick of this race. But man, we've got to start consistently hitting the ball.

I'm here, as always, win or lose. I had to work 23 hours on Friday, so I spent most of the weekend resting up and watching the tournament. Props to Baylor. I didn't think we'd get swept this year. Of course, I believe they opened our 2002 conference season by sweeping us too.

And why shouldn't they be?

This is by far the best case for why the baseball polls are, in the end, rather meaningless.

Baylor showed three times why they are a better baseball team than Texas, and they will not be ranked ahead of them. They didn't take 2 of 3, they took all 3.

And why is that? If the polls are to rank the "best" teams by the levels of their greatness, then certainly sweeping the consensus national #1 team should mean you're better than them. Maybe not the nation's #1 team, but certainly better than the Horns.

Or if you disagree, why then should Texas be considered a better team than Baylor?

6iron,

Rankings are not about who the best team is "right now." Rankings are about what teams have proven so far. If polls were altered every week so that every time you beat a team you automatically get ranked higher than they do in the next poll, we'd have some pretty weird polls.

I already said Baylor was better than Texas RIGHT NOW. They beat Texas three out of three games. But it's hard to ignore a team that had 21 wins before conference play even started, especially one that had played 7 games against top 10 teams and went 6-1 in those games.

One weekend does not make or break any team. Baylor is 15-7, including their recent hot streak of sweeping Vanderbilt and Texas. But they have losses to such giants as UT-Arlington and Northwestern State. Texas is 21-4, after having one of the worst series I've seen them have in the 4 years that I've lived in Austin, and those four losses are to teams that are currently ranked in the top 15. There's a lot to be said for keeping the Horns in the top 5.
