...the rumor going around the sips' board is that LeCure is ineligible due to grades. Sounds like a couple other players are ineligible as well. LeCure was not introduced during their alumni game today as a bit of evidence, and Garrido said that there were some issues with LeCure.

This would be quite a blow to them and could provide some chances for the rest of the Big XII to win a few more games versus the horns.

The rumor is true. I believe Sam has been given his release. The bigger rumor is that more players did not make grades. We'll have to wait and see.

this must be the first year that longhorn players were required to take tests. There seems to be quite a few that didn't make grades

hot_rod,

Agree

Why? Because these kids either don't put forth the effort to, or are not able to pass their classes? This reminds me of an old saying. "You can lead a horse to water, but if you can get it to float on its back, you've got something!" Sadly, I feel that's the case with a lot of athletes schools are admitting these days.

For a player in this situation, what are his (or the school's) options?

Obviously he won't be playing this season for his school but can he play at a JUCO this spring and then transfer back in the fall? Can he just work on his grades at his current school and just miss the season? Does this year count against his eligability?

I'm just curious....

I imagine they could redshirt him since he hasn't actually played any games... but there may be some grade eligibility rule against that. I'm not sure about that.

Why? Because that's their job. Fault falls on the students yes, but their job is to make sure they get it done. That's what they are paid to do. The players blew it, but so did these guys. Not to mention that makes three major guys on the three major teams that have gone down due to grades. This isn't an isolated thing apparently. One guy goes down ok. Three and you have to take a serious look at your system and what you're doing.

Does anybody have a good understanding on what the rule is and how it works that would be willing to explain it? Is it just like a high school no pass-no play rule?

In LeCure's case he cannot attend JUCO because he has already played two years. Also, he would not be able to redshirt because there is a rule that keeps players from doing that if they don't make grades. Since he got his release he would be able to transfer to another school, if he could get in, and play immediately. However, his coach decides which schools he will release him to. For example, I would be willing to bet that Augie won't release him to the Big 12. My guess is he will attend a smaller school, Div II or NAIA, but that is just a guess.

bummer for them. Yay for me.

They lost a lot last year to the draft, like Howell and Street. The horns losing LeCure makes me smile.

That's too bad for UT. Sam LeFlunk had actually pitched well for them in the postseason the last two years.

LeCure sucked on the road.

Very inconsistent pitcher.

May hurt them, but probably not. Now they may get someone in there who is a real ace. LeCure never impressed me, not like Howell did.

In my opinion this will hurt them regardless of how good he was. Simply losing any arm off of your roster is bad, especially a starting pitcher and especially since this arm had the most experience on the roster. Now they're more than likely going to have to move someone from their very good bullpen which will weaken it (similar to ours last season after meyer moved into the rotation).

I think he'll probably just get drafted and play there. Sure hurts where he'll get drafted, though.

Josh W.,

You have a flawed view of what an academic support staff does. The player still has to do the work, take the quizzes and tests, and make the grade. If they don't get that done, it's no one's fault but their own. Schools like tu and us have premier academic support programs, and their JOB is to provide assistance to the student-athletes in any legal way possible. What else do you want from them?
Quincey P. Morris
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Part of their job is to make sure these guys get their work done. Plain and simple. It's one thing to lose one guy, but three major players? There is fault on both sides of that equation.

Somebody obviously forgot to deliver the cash and a shipment of pot to the UT's professor's house.

Has there been any confirmation of this yet? I haven't seen anything in the Austin American Statesperson, but then again I haven't been looking all that hard for it.

There was a snippet in today's sports page that mentioned Justin Simmons and his "apology" for (allegedly) sexually assaulting a girl when he was 18 (she was 16 at the time.) He admits to the act, but claims it was consentual. I suppose it was an OK apology, but what I can't firgure out is why it took him over 4 1/2 years to issue his statement. The incident occurred right after his high school graduation, before he enrolled at UT.

The girl did not report any sexual assault until the day after Simmons was drafted by the Dodgers. Was he supposed to apologize for consensual sex 4 1/2 years ago?

You're right...no sense in Simmons taking the high road or doing the honorable thing. Just see what you can get off of a 16 year old girl and keep your mouth shut until she goes public. It would be foolish to realize your mistake and make amends right after it happened. Please...

Spare me the justification for a young man's indiscretion. What both of these kids did was wrong, but please don't make Simmons out to be the victim here. If you read the text of his apology, it's pretty clear that this is a serious matter. The young lady obviously felt differently about the situation than Simmons did. Believe me, Simmons is not the one being mistreated here.

Simmons apology included saying that his actions were affected by the consumption of alcohol. He was also arrested in Arlington on a drunk in public charge just before the Big 12 tournament last year. Seems like a little maturity didn't change his drinking habits.

The apology was to settle a lawsuit. I guess the cynical among us can theorize that it wasn't out of the goodness of his heart.

On the other hand, settlements and apologies NEVER go hand in hand. At least, in writing and public.
