Reading on Astros MLB about the 2026 draft choice from Southern Miss and now playing in the Arizona Fall League. He had a short season due to injury at A+ Asheville where on one of the videos he hit a double down in the corner and Jack Moss scored in front of him. Moss did really well at Asheville in 2026. He had a .339 average and .858 OPS. Moved from A ball to A+ to finish at Corpus Christi in AA in 2026. Short time to end the season in Corpus but did hit .286. Not a lot of power, but did increase his doubles output at Asheville. Getting it figured out. Good for Jack.

Jack had a great year. He bet on himself. Reds where not playing him very much on their high A team so he asked for his release. Astros picked him up a few days later and he showed what he could do if he plays regularly. AA is a big step up and he showed himself pretty well in a short time. I would expect him back there next year. Look forward to seeing how he does moving forward. He is a tough out.

The step up from A+ to AA is the hardest one from what i have read and heard. Harder than from AA to AAA. Moss has never shown the ability to hit for power and he doesn't show any speed. However, his 16.1% K-Rate is absolutely phenomenal!
In 2024 and 2025 he had a 17.7% K-rate which is also extremely good so to lower it the next year in more Plate Appearances is what should keep pushing him upward, as long as he can continue to get on base with contact and a decent walk-rate.
Another positive out of this year were his 20 doubles to go along with 2 triples and 5 homeruns. If he is going to play 1B he is going to have to be able to provide power and run production somehow. If he's not going to be a 20+ HR bat he needs to at least push the 35+ double range so he can knock in runs.

He is very similar to Luis Arraez except Arraez can play 2B where a lack of power is accepted. Most teams are looking for power out of their 1B and 3B to make up for the lack of it in the other positions.

There are some guys in the Astros system that project at both corner OF as well as 1B if they don't stick at OF and they are more the prototypical 1B type hitter with power.

With the Astros major league roster in a mess it could be that trades are the only way out of it for them and since they don't have top-end minor league talent to offer up it could be that guys like Moss that have some very intriguing skill-sets end up getting traded

I agree that Jack has kind of long odds, but he sure has one of the sweetest left handed swings we'll ever see.

Maybe he could follow the model of Keith Hernandez? He had a good long MLB career at 1B by averaging about ten homers a year. Of course it didn't hurt that he won the golden glove almost every year.

Hernandez had over 2,000 hits. That's kind of a stretch at this point.

Not figuring it out, the Astros played him and Reds didn't. Real simple, play him and he will hit. Can't hit for power if you don't play. Let's see what he does next year before putting x or y label on the kid. Note that he is hitting over .300 in over 700 AB's in his professional career and had an .OPS of over .850 this year. Not a punch out machine either.

Agree 100 percent with this comment. Someone that knows baseball and doesn't become fascinated with a guy that hits .200-.220 with 20 home runs and punches out over 40 percent of the time. Moss did all that with 319 AB's as well.

Well, of course that's a stretch at this point. I was just making the case that a first baseman with good defense who can hit for average has a path in the majors.

Bet he doesn't hit .200 with 40 percent K rate and 20 HRs at AA-AAA. Someone indicated he asked for his release from Reds. Nothing like doing that and going out and putting up numbers after 319 ABs at .339 with 20 doubles, 5 HRs, over 50 RBIs and an OPS over .850. On speed, kid stole 10 bags. All after hitting .340 last year after missing 2/3's of the season with an injury. Sure if Astros can't seem to figure out what to do with him, teams like Brewers and Rays could plug him in as they seem to value this type of player. Think he may have just been drafted by the wrong team. Think the Reds wouldn't like to have him back?
