How did OU do it with their pitching?

By the end of the regular season I think most of us were thinking the Aggies just didn't have the pitching to make a deep run in post season. Out of curiosity I finally checked the final SEC team standings. The Aggies finished second to UGA in batting although the Aggies scored more runs (conf games only).

To my surprise the Aggies finished 10th in team ERA, I really expected it to be worst. And OU finished 15th. Their team era was about a half run per game worse than the Aggies. How in the heck did they do it. Makes me wonder if Sims hadn't hurt his arm could we have had a chance?

I thought someone would say that, but they didn't just out slug everyone. They played eight games in the super regional and CWS and in those eight games they gave up only 21 runs total, only once did they give up more than three runs in a game.

What I'm wondering is did their pitching staff just finally get its act together, or did a bunch of guys who hadn't pitched much during the season come off the bench and do a lot better than anyone expected?

They made changes.

Moved their Friday night starter to the bullpen where he did well.

We made similar changes but it did not work as well for us.

Them starting 3 true freshman in the CWS and winning all those games is pretty darn impressive and showed they developed them over the course of the season.

Thanks, I was hoping someone would have an answer. I guess their pitching coach won't have any shortage of opportunities for becoming a head coach will he?

They have an elite pitching coach as their head coach. It paid off big time for them.

They limited free passes, played good defense, threw strikes and didn't get too big in their swings offensively.

It's a simple recipe that worked out for them.

Their giant Texas freshman who throws gas actually got way better during the season and took over the Friday role which allowed them to drop a stained arm from the rotation into the bullpen.

In short, they developed their young pitchers through the season and it paid off handsomely.

None of our young pitchers seemed to improve even a little

Our freshman that had the most promise, Vincent, probably found it hard to improve much while barely being used. I hope he figures heavily into our plans next season.

I agree 100%. This is what mid-week games should be for. Instead we pitched Vargas, Lyons, Freshcorn about half the innings.

Midweek losses largely kept us out of the tournament last year. Earley wasn't taking any chances this year, which I understand.

While you're generally correct, how do we really know? I don't think any of the freshmen threw any meaningful innings all season.

Because if they were ANY better then they'd have pitched on the weekends in some role. Because we desperately needed quality, even decent, innings. And they were nowhere to be seen. So the two options are (1) they didn't improve - and I'm not blaming them since they were basically never allowed to pitch under live fire, or (2) the team was so mismanaged that they kept better options on the pine costing us victories, in which case the whole staff should go.

Mid-week is for development. Period. Unless you schedule a 3 game series like UF/FSU which we never have. It's not for seeing if your all SEC lineup can hit Sam Houstons Tuesday guy.

...and mid-week losses did NOT cost us a tourney berth last year. I think we only had 2, maybe 3. Finishing 11-19 in conference including being swept by Mizzou might have. Losing to Cal Poly and New Mexico St on a weekend might have. Starting conference 0-6 being swept my Bama and Vandy didn't help. Only a hot streak mid season even got us anywhere near the conversation.

Statistically speaking. The team that scores more runs usually wins. According to sources and statistics. Not sure why more teams don't do that more often
