Personally, I think it could be a good shakeup. Most big league guys have what it takes, and I think Enright's experience in the pros will help find that talent in some of our current roster as well as any incoming guys. Hoping he has the sense to pull guys when needed, and always has an arm on deck for every situation. Wishing him all the best!

I think it's a wait and see.

There is very little information out there about him to make any assessment other than speculation or extrapolation.

I hope he does so well he's a head coach in 2 years!

My gut reaction was that the Angels have had ****ty pitching and pitching development for as long as I can remember.

I'm listening to a podcast with him from a few days ago and will kind of dig into him to form a real opinion.

100% wait and see for me. I'm not exactly terribly impressed by the Angels as a whole but admittedly not cognizant enough in the nuances of the day to day of that operation to truly have an informed opinion.

I'm not blown away by this though, that's for sure.

I now know the name of 4 pitching coaches in the total world of baseball.

He is by far the best/worst.

Earley had to work with at least these variables.....

Who was available
Who was interested
Price to get them
Their experience
How soon could they start work here
Ability to recruit and develop

Plus other factors

Wait and see. I think it's impossible to really have an informed opinion on him as a coach. His background seems fine. It's hard to judge him on MLB pitching stats, when he's a small part of the organization and his focus was likely on MiLB development.

So like every coaching hire ever, for all time, and forever?

Earley is no longer considered a coach in good long-term standing. I wasn't expecting Cy Young, and clearly, we didn't get him.

With all due respect, aren't those the same variables for any hire? In any business?

Who, exactly, would you want as pitching coach? I follow college baseball closer than most fans, and I couldn't name you five college pitching coaches right now (when there was more stability, I probably could have).

From what I understand was happening with Jason Kelly day-to-day….ANYTHING is a MAJOR upgrade. I hope what I was told was exaggerated big time. Sounds like it was ridiculous

So I'm hopeful that this guy is able to learn to recruit. And I hope he is VERY hands on with the players day-to-day. This is greatly needed

Clearly, God gave Early his toughest battle when you saddle him with those variables.

I love the west coast ties. We'll always be able to recruit Texas. Hopefully Barry will be able to recruit California well. USCs entire weekend rotation was all California guys.

One positive on Enright is he worked under Brent Strom for a couple seasons in Arizona.

Were you blown away by Max Weiner's resume when POS hired him? On paper it was not all that impressive. Their was some buzz around him in the Seattle system but what does the average baseball fan know about roving minor league pitching coaches.

That dude was a failed coach BEFORE he got here. It doesn't have to be hindsight when the writing was on the wall

That is exactly why I said why I am in wait and see mode and even stressed that I do not know much about him aside from him existing.

I said this in another thread already, but I remember Weiner's first interview with TexAgs got me super excited because of his demeanor and the clear plan that he had in mind for the program. I am looking forward to hearing the first interview for this guy before I really feel one way or the other about his potential

Enright is exactly the kind of candidate Brauny said they'd be looking to hire. Essentially another Max Weiner typesomeone from the professional ranks who is neck-deep in all this statistical, Trackman, Rapsodo, video game "stuff". I gather they've spent a bunch of money on some kind of tech-laden "pitching lab" and they wanted to hire someone who might know how to use it. I personally think all the tech usage is kinda interesting on a more macro level, but with respect to helping to improve the effectiveness of individual players, I think its benefits are way more marginal than most people probably assume. Teaching proper mental approach is FAR more consequential.

I did look up his career details, though, and I do kinda like what I saw. The dude was a frickin' grinder. He played in just about every league there is and will have almost certainly have gained a good deal of knowledge about all kinds of pitching philosophies and mechanics. Should help to make him a much better advocate for his pitchers and provide a better mental/emotional atmosphere for them. Help them to be less afraid of failure and pitch with more confidence. With that kind of backstory, I can also see him being a guy full of good stories and being someone the players could really respect and like.

Maybe most importantly, he's pitched long enough to have learned that to have success you need to KEEP THE F-ING BALL DOWN and CHANGE SPEEDS. Something the last coach seems to have been unaware of or incapable of teaching.

Can you elaborate on what you were told?

Clearly Kelly could have done a better job. I've heard he wasn't as into analytics as most these days but nothing much else beyond what we could see on the field.

You can't always prevent injuries so I'm not going to gripe about that but my biggest beef with Kelly was that we knew we were down 4 arms we expected to be big contributors before the end of February and I think we should have gotten the younger and transfer arms a lot more innings in non-conference and Tuesday games.

I'm not sure how much blame you can put on a coach when a pitcher can't execute an 0-2 slider and instead hangs a cement-mixer up there that gets deposited in the cheap seats like Sdao & Moss did a lot of the time.

Congrats on the timely hire. Should help with recruits and transfers in knowing about a pitching coach with
a lot of good experience.
