Here is something that happened in a 10U game the other night.

High school kid umpires, who struggled all night and the scorekeeper wasn't much better.

The batter sees a few pitches, and umpire calls full count, then ball 4. Batter goes to first. Next pitch the kids stole 2nd, and a few pitches later the batter singles and the run scores.

The coach calls time and states that the original batter (the one who stole and scored) actually only had 3 balls thrown to him not 4 balls.

After a long discussion the umpires rules the base runner back to the plate and to complete his AB.

My stance was, once 1 pitch is thrown to the next batter any appeal is done. I stated for an example if an incorrect batter bats in the wrong order, the other team doesn't recognize it and the correct batter comes up next and sees at least one pitch, the lineup is basically reset and nothing can bet done.

Has anyone had experience with this or a correct ruling on this?

You are correct. Once the first pitch is thrown to the next batter then you can not go back. The other coach should have appealed too and have the tournament director/Board Member on Duty (Little League)come over to make a ruling.

No scouts at the game, we have a strict rule they can only attend practice (outside the fenceline, of course) but no games.

because it was pool play, if we were in bracket play the entire case would have been thrown at him.

That other coach knows better. If it's a league game he should get some big repercussions because he's just attempting to bully a kid umpire and it worked.

If there was only 3 balls he would have known it right after ball 4 was called. He was taking a shot in hindsight after he scored to see if he could bully the umpire.

He's the definition of a loser. Cheating to win youth baseball is just stupid. Don't care how high of level select ball it even is. Your a loser if you do it.

Amen Amen Amen!!!!!

We played in another town earlier this season and their coach tried some bull***** They only use game changer and we keep a physical book. The mom doing theirs "couldn't find" the proof the coach wanted. The ump was a grumpy old man and asked to see my book. I showed him exactly what occurred and blue was correct. The coach tried to argue that I didn't know how to keep book. The umpire looked at me and said "no offense, ma'am" and then looked back at him and said "I'm pretty sure she's been keeping book since you were playing little league. You wanna play ball or forfeit?"

League or tourney? "Pool play" signifies tourney. Where do they have teens as umps for tourney ball?

Bad on the other coach, bad on you or your coach for not putting up a better fight, bad on the scorekeeper (who must've been for the other team, no Game Changer use?) for not notifying the coach immediately.

Where is this league?

Similar situation happened to Cam Smith of the Astros the other night. Smith swung and missed on the first two pitches. On the second strike though, they stole second and a throwing error allowed a runner to score. Smith then swung and missed on the third pitch but stayed in the box. He took a couple of pitches for balls. Fouled off like two more. Then they threw him ball three and he walked down to first base. No one had a clue what the count was. He was credited with a walk.

14 years of managing daddy ball for 4 different kids… some of my best friends and worst enemies made during that time. The level of dbaggery is so high, I ended up collecting nice people and didn't matter how good Johnny was if the parents sucked. Had a bunch of these stupid events over the years. If you pitch the next batter, dude just stfu and take your beer belly back to your dugout.

Once a player touches the base safely, no changes can be made. This is why both the umpire and score keeper need to have a rule book in their possession.

Just FYI, while I don't know what code the game was being played under (possibly LL, but who knows), the rule reference under OBR (MLB rules) is in rule 5: once the player occupies a base legally and the pitcher gets set, the player may not return to a previous base. At this point, there would be no appeal or protest because everything happened "legally," or was based on a judgment call.

Its all players and coach's responsibilities to know the count.

If it was under high school NFHS rules, this is what would apply

"there is a question about a rule that was possibly misapplied, the team's coach or captain shall inform the umpire at time of the play and before a pitch to the next batter of either team, or before the umpires leave the field if the play in question was the last play of the game." (I.e. OP was correct)

That said, this is 10U. We need these teenagers working little league to be given grace and patients. They make mistakes like all of us umpires but it is usually way less than the number of mistakes made by the kids in these games. Parents and coaches giving them a lot of grief is a large part of the reason they quit and is why we have a massive umpire shortage in this country.

Just think, if everyone had thrown all their trash on the field, the refs might have let that kid re-bat.

No rulebook needed. Obvious you can't have a do-over 2 batters later.

he said the ump ordered him back to the plate to finish his at bat.

then the story ends.

reminds me of an old HeeHaw skit where a one legged man kept being pestered about how he lost his leg. He said "Look- I will answer that one question, and you promise not to ask anymore.". "Agreed!"

"It got bit off."

Youth sports management consists of old guys who never had any ability but in their minds, they are the second coming of Babe Ruth.

We're talking 10 year olds. 99% of the current players will never play higher than high school JV, if they are lucky.

It appears there was more time spent on chastising teen age umpires....who will ever return to the diamond.

Meanwhile adults stand by wringing their hands lamenting the lack of umpires.

Doesn't even need to have been a pitch, just some action
