You may not be able to teach an old dog new tricks, but No. 15 Texas A&M taught the Georgia Bulldogs a thing or two.
The Aggies opened the weekend with a 3-2 upset over No. 11 Georgia on Thursday night at Davis Diamond.
A&M and UGA had a quiet start before the Aggies brought in two runs in the bottom of the third. Mya Perez doubled and advanced to third on the throw, bringing Tallen Edwards sliding into home.
Only one pitch later, senior Micaela Wark sent a soaring single up the middle, followed by another run brought in by Perez.
“We kept fighting and fighting and fighting, and that's what these games are about,” said head coach Trisha Ford. “We got some big hits when we needed it. Mya, I want to know what that exit velo was on that double. I think she hit that ball hard.”
Lessentine is finding her own routine, especially her confidence to pound the zone with every batter faced. Lessentine threw yet another relentless game. In six innings pitched, she struck out six batters, only walking two of the 24 she faced.
“I thought (Sydney) threw a really good game,” Ford said. “You make a mistake against a really good team, and sometimes it goes out, and I thought she did overall a really, really good job.”
The Bulldogs answered the Aggies in the top of the sixth to tie things up, but the Maroon & White responded within minutes.
In a pinch-hitting role, freshman Maddie Sauni brought home Kelsey Mathis with an RBI double to push the Aggies to their one-run advantage over the Bulldogs.
“I talked to (Jeff) Harger before the bat, just be ready and don’t be scared,” Sauni said. “Just knowing what I can do and attacking the first pitch.
“Being in the dugout and being able to lift them up and then getting a chance to be out there and doing the same for them is just amazing.”
Maybe you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but the Aggies put the Bulldogs up in the doghouse for the night.
The Maroon & White will meet the Bulldogs back in Davis Diamond on Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. CT.
