He didn't look great in the scrimmage. Hopefully he's not fighting some kind of injury.

He didn't play until the second weekend (Cal Poly) last season either. I'm sure he's working off some rust and we don't want to rush him back. We're also waiting on seeing Bollinger and Cunningham.

I mean there really hasn't been a spot for a high leverage reliever to come in. Maybe last night but we were still up by five runs going up into the ninth inning

Even high leverage relievers who haven't pitched in awhile need to be eased back in. Last night in the 9th would have been a perfect opportunity to give him some work with a comfortable lead. Wonder if he's sick? I believe that's what the issue with Hacopian is as well.

With our early season schedule, there's a chance where there is no "high leverage" situation. IMO, you still need to get pitchers some work, even if it's for an inning or a few batters. I mentioned before that he didn't look great in the scrimmage. Was it just rust? If so, then even more reason to get him into some early games.

Agreed, if he is healthy and ready to go, you need to at least get him an inning here or there. Hopefully nothing serious is going on. We will see.

Reading this thread, it seems nobody knows his status. Good ? for coach in the presser.

I know nothing about Stewart's status, but it was interesting that we only saw one pitcher last night making his first appearance (Vargas) after a weekend where we didn't get as deep into the bullpen as we might have. Is that because we wanted to see the guys who pitched well this weekend go out and do it again, or some indication that we are going to be leaning heavily on a few arms? I tend to suspect is was more of the former rather than the latter, but we shall see going forward.

Coach Earley has talked a lot this year about earning playing time -- those who are put on the field during a game have earned the spot. That would by necessity imply there are those who haven't earned it. I don't know anything about Josh Stewart, but I do wonder if that perspective is playing a role?

Earning playing time sounds good, but you have to be carful. We might never have seen Evan Aschenbeck become a dominant closer if he hadn't been given a chance that his results in practice didn't really demand. Sometimes, what guys do in games that count is different from what they do in practice.

Agreed. At this point, we can hope the Coach Earley is keeping that in mind given he saw first hand how that played out under D****enoggle.

Stewart has a good track record. He has done it. It has to be he is not ready physically yet.

Coach Earley has said in one of his preseason interviews that he is looking for 7-9 arms in the rotation. I think that will be something like below which follows with the number of guys who threw double digit innings last year. So we have seen everyone but Cunningham and Stewie

SP
Moss, Sdao, Sims, Lyons

RP
Darden, Freahcorn, Vargas, Stewie, Hubert, Vincent, Cunningham

Earley on radio stated that there is nothing wrong with him and the situation just didn't call for bringing him in. He said he would've pitched him Friday if he knew how the weekend would play out.

Sounds like this weekend we just had more high leverage arms than high leverage moments

Yea it makes sense why you wouldn't use him Friday with a big lead, and then Saturday was a blowout after the first inning. Sunday probably could have used him, but freshcorn was rolling
