Older brother played 1 year under Schloss (not Earley) all AAC first team and younger brother is a freshman all conference who was nails last night. Both CStat locals. Might be worth trying to convince to come back home.

There is no CStat so they must not exist…

If the new scholarships become reality We should be able to get more players like these guys for quality depth

With all of the changes and NIL and caps and all the crap, I don't even know what the rules are for scholarship limits anymore. And even if there are rules, it seems like every program has found a way to skirt the rules and do whatever they need to do to try and win.

Maybe college sports has always been a mess and full of corruption, but it just feels like it's on steroids now.

To be fair if not for the portal this guy would've either rode the bench at A&M for 3 years, or transferred out and had to sit a year before playing at UTSA.

So it did benefit them too.

But I generally agree. I really sucks for these smaller schools knowing their stars are all gonna get poached the second the season is over.

It's CStat or College Suction.

Sorry, I don't make the rules.

You can now add that phase to the list that includes "jumbo shrimp" and "almost pregnant".

Why would they want to be depth when they could be starting and playing at a place like UTSA?

Are they related to Billy Hodge? Played catcher with Dave Elmendorf.

No, Kevin is their dad and runs the 12; a local baseball group.

Goes both ways. How many portal guys does UTSA have? They have players from A&M, TCU, Oregon, Sam, Murray St., A&M CC......

That's not what I meant. The OP says try to convince them to come home. Tampering and back channel negotiating isn't good for college sports.

I understand. My point is the portal works both ways. And yes I understand back channel negotiating is bad and is against the rules. I'm also not naive to pretend it doesn't happen. But, either way, I'd wager most of the kids who are having these conversations would be entering the portal to test their options regardless.

So, back to the portal, yes, you have kids doing well at small programs and getting tempted to go to bigger programs. Which, you can easily argue is better for the athlete even if it's worse for college sports. But you also have kids who went to big programs and may not be satisfied for whatever reason and can easily go somewhere else and get a new start, like UTSA.

I'll say I'm not a fan of the way the portal and NIL are working in tandem. So not necessarily arguing for it. But you have everyone saying how bad it is for the sport and parity because the "haves" will be able to take all the good athletes. At the same time we had one of the crazier regionals I can remember. So the "have nots" obviously have found a way to make the portal and system work for their advantage as well.

Valid point, but resources come into play as well. UTSA doesn't even have a locker room for their baseball team. The have to walk about a 1/4 mile from the athletic facility to the field. Most 5A/6A high school fields in TX are better than their field.

Their run this year might expedite this, but their current athletic master plan will add a player development and nutrition performance center for baseball in the next 5 years.
