We played against OSU, a team that has made it to OKC several years in a row. We dominated them - until the last inning. We played against FSU at their place, a hostile crowd, and came out on top. It was a big test and we passed. We CAN win big games.
Last night we played at our house, a huge crowd, supercharged atmosphere, and did not have a good game at all. We failed. It happens. Too much adrenalin, too nervous. We were the hunted, as Coach has started calling it. Tech had the passion, the will, the outstanding pitcher and a darn good hitting offense. Recall that their coach was once our hitting coach. Our offense improved a LOT when he came on board years ago. His teams WILL hit well. Not every game but most games. Last night they did. With a lot of power. Like we often do - just not last night.
I have stated before - I really like Lefty. She's a great pitcher. Has had some outstanding outings. But she has ups and downs. She had a great season last year but she had games like we saw last night. She had 200 strikouts last year but also gave up 91 walks. Not a good ratio. 21 hit by pitches. She got hammered in some games and shut down the other team in others. Up and down. Starts and in relief. At times it was frustrating and other times magical. Up and down.
Both teams had errors. But four errors by our side is certainly not normal. And we simply could not hit Canady last night. Many other teams in the country have had the same problem. WCWS teams. The best hitters in the country have had problems against her. She was pitcher of the year for a reason. They simply pitched and hit much better than us last night. It happens.
Recall Lessentine's two outstanding outings this year - 19 SO's in one, 11 in the other. Batters could not hit her. Canady did that to US last night. It DOES work both ways.
But it is only one game. As the saying goes, s*it happens. We will bounce back from this disappointment and move on. The experience will only benefit us. The players know we have to win games like last night to obtain our goal of making the WCWS every year (or at least most years) and I firmly believe we WILL win a lot of games like last night with our current coaching staff, this year's players and players in the future. They WILL learn to just relax and play the game the way they are capable of doing. Their future is bright.
That future starts today.
