Chron has a big profile of Michael Earley this morning, good quotes from Earley, Spencer Torkelson, Gavin Grahovac, and other players.

Quote:

While Texas held its welcome press conference for Schlossnagle and the departed Texas A&M staff, new Aggies Athletic Director Trev Alberts addressed a somber locker room back in College Station. Standing with five staff members, including university president General Mark A. Welsh, Alberts promised a thorough search for the next head coach and asked for their feedback.

"They deserve a voice," Alberts told Chron. "It's more like the pro world."
Alberts asked most of the staff to leave that meeting except for General Welsh. They then pulled up chairs and sat down.

"Guys, I want to talk," Alberts said.

While players like LaViolette and Schott spoke with emotion, the situation was still too raw. Alberts gave them his personal phone number and told them to call.

LaViolette, now a junior and projected No. 2 overall pick in this year's MLB Draft, phoned Alberts first. He wanted Earley to be considered. Grahovac called Alberts next, reassuring him his best chance at maintaining the roster was to give Earley a shot.

How about we cut that time frame down to four months

I was told that yes, Earley is great, yes, the players love playing for him BUT he's more like their friend than the strong authority figure that is sometimes needed for teams. It is to be seen how true this is or not and if it impacts the team or not.

Trev can work with him, then. It was a play to keep the players and it worked. Now we need to make the situation work.

You can't hire 2 ass holes in a row. The texas coach was not a player's coach, it's probably wise to consider a player's coach to follow an authoritarian.

I am part of the problem and you're the victim...

As long as there is a structure within the program to get the players to work hard, I'm fine with it.

I'm not super worried about it with the team this year. I think there is enough veteran leadership that came so close to keep them focused and hungry this year. My bigger concern is down the line in a few years what the culture of the program is. I'm not saying Earley's approach is bad or won't work, you just never know with a first time head coach.

I 100% agree with you on this, it was the only way to keep the key pieces together. If things had gone a different way it may have set our program back quite a few years.

The rat in Austin and his **** buddy had one goal. Find a way to make our baseball program take a step back so they could catch up. It didn't go as planned and I'm glad our AD and president saw that.

We'll see over time but IMO it was worth the risk to hire Earley to keep the band together for this season.

If he hired assistants to shore up his blind spots, I imagine one of them has the personality to be bad cop. He's going to have to adjust some, but based on that article I'm sure it's been discussed.

The honest truth is the players and most of us all love him. But he's got a difficult road ahead of him. And the team being the consensus #1 to start the season doesn't make it any easier or allow for a lot of grace for a rookie head coach. Hopefully he succeeds.
