How does someone who only played 4 games for us last year get signed to MLB contract? I don't know much about MLB. Just seems odd to me. Does he throw really fast and have great potential that a club is betting on?

upper 90's fastball and quality offspeed tends to get you a look from the pros

There will always be a team willing to bet a little money on the potential of an upper 90s fastball and decent offspeed.

And it probably cost them $1000 to give him a test run. Not like it was a substantial contract, although to be fair I haven't seen the details.

So the pros saw the "potential" and offered him but Schloss didn't see enough potential there to play him more than 4 games. Strange.

the pros have more time to try and get a pitcher figured out. For them the only games that really matter are with the big club so getting straight in "A" ball works toward that goal.

Not strange at all. Wins and losses aren't important in the minors, player development is. A college coach and a major league team's developmental system have different goals and incentives.

When I was playing (early 2010s) we had a 1B who was about 6'5, 260lb. Mountain of a man with incredible power at the plate. Didn't play much at all but he had pitched some in high school. We got short on pitching in our regional in Virginia and ended up throwing him and he went something like 4+ innings of 1-run ball throwing low-mid 90s. Got drafted in the 23rd round as a pitcher.

Late-round flyers are not uncommon based on measurables. Pretty neat opportunity for the guy.

Hire him and fire him for being such a stupid manager that he only got us within one win of an NC…amirite?

from what i saw, he relied way too much on his fastball. blame the weiner for not developing him cause he was a highly touted transfer (much like tanner jones).

Fastball , even at 95 ….. is hard to get by a good collegiate hitter. One with very little movement is even harder. Kid has a live arm and great potential , but will need detailed work in a good farm system.

true since Cortez's old 99mph fastball had been getting rocked the previous season due to no movement… Then he changed it before this last season.

At the very least they neglected developing all the arm talent they had. Freshman pitchers didn't get enough innings. Surely, this stud should have been pitching more on Tuesdays and with safe leads. Could have really used another live arm when got stretched thinner at the CWS.
