I played both. Pretty identical skill set to be good at both. The average play is basically a mirror (opposite) for SS to 2nd and vice versa. The one thing that benefits a great SS is needing a better arm as it can require the longest throw from the infield to 1st base.

Quickness at 2nd is a little more important because all the double plays and covering stolen bases. Range and arm strength a little more important than 2nd because of plays from the hole.

Having said that a good to great SS / 2nd baseman can play both fairly easily. It really just comes down to comfort. I preferred playing 2nd base.

Pros want a SS to have a more pop than a 2nd baseman as the need for quickness as a 2nd baseman can mean smaller stature for a 2nd baseman.
