are outs.

Mingione, in the presser, mentioned how our big inning was the factor.

Statistically the vast majority of CBB games are decided by innings with crooked numbers. And tonight with the bunting and the small ball, UK handed us some outs and we took em.

Its still a game of 27 outs, dont give em away.

Playing small ball didn't have anything to do with it

Prager shoving changeups for nearly 7 no hit innings is what did it

They didn't even have much of an opportunity to attempt small ball other than 1 or 2 small jams

Solid pitching is the most important commodity if I have to pick the top one.

one of the old adages of baseball...

the winning team scores more runs in one inning...

than the losing team scores in the entire game

It's an arms race, always. Literally. That's why Sdao being out really hurts, IMO, but we're in about as good shape as we can be right now on that front.

Can't play small ball when you don't have any traffic on the base

A wise man who coached me growing up (my Dad, Guy Wallace '51 TAMU All Am. SS and also coached two years at TAMU) would tell his Little League teams, "the winning team scores as much or more in one inning than the losing team will score the entire game." That's why you play for the big inning early in the game and start playing small ball (i.e., for one run, bunting) late in the game.

When I coached LL teams I would take the daily box scores of the MLB games to practice and prove him right every time--typically about 75% to 80% of the time.

Is that a function of one coach leaving a weakening pitcher in the game for 1 or 2 batters too many and it's suddenly too late?
Prager was visibly running out of gas in the 7th, but he had a no hitter going and we had a 5 run lead, so Schloss let him pitch. Moore ran out of gas in 0-0 game and O'brien wasn't ready to put the fire out. I think at 5-0 Mingione decided to save his remaining arms for the next game.

As much as the broadcasters were fawning over UK's defense last night, ours was pretty dang solid outside of Ali's booted ball that was going to be hard to handle no matter what and Bell's arrant throw for a sure fire DP.

Our second baseman's toss into left field probably should be included in your analysis.

Yes and no. Often times a pitcher will lose it for a batter or two then pull it back together. Throwing 80 pitches there will be a patch of 10 that are sub par. The question is will he pull it back together and is the reliever going to do better over the next 10 pitches. Often the first thing to fade is a pitchers grip so the location and movement does before velocity does so it can be hard to tell.
