So I looked up the actual rule for the check swing that would've sent Florida St to the winner's bracket. It's always been one of those hard to define things for me, kind of a 'ya know it when ya see it' and that whole stadium knew it last night, you can hear it and see it in the video when it happens. But the actual rule, which I didn't see in the thread last night is this:
NCAA 2-39 Half Swing
Half Swing
SECTION 39. An attempt by the batter to stop the forward motion of the bat while swinging, which puts the batter in jeopardy of a strike being called. The half swing shall be called a strike if the barrel head of the bat passes the batter's front hip. This does not apply to a bunt attempt when the batter pulls the bat back.
So if the barrel of the bat goes past his front hip it should be called. It's hard to tell from the angle behind the pitcher, but on the replay its pretty clear he goes well beyond the hip and thus should have been rung up. He was a solid 2 feet out in front of his hip. I know there's a hesitation by umps to end a game or affect the outcome by a call like that but by not calling it he changed who went to the winners and losers bracket.
Check Swing Slo Mo Replay This youtube clip should take you right to the slow motion replay. Then there's an additional angle that follows showing that the 1st base ump could've made the call he was so far out in front.
I'm not a fan of either team but was obviously looking for the Vols to go down. They talked all game about how crucial game 1 was. I get that you can't count on the umps and you gotta overcome bad calls, but at this stage its going to be razor thin in a lot of games and you have to get the calls right. That pitcher did what he needed to do and got the batter to bite. Tough break for the 'noles
