So in MLB if you lean into it and get hit I'm pretty sure it's what the pitch would have been. If it was a ball it's still a ball. In NCAA is it just an auto strike? Even if the pitch was 6" inside?

Not saying I agree with it. Was a genuine question.

But, if that's rule, even if it's not, why the hell wouldn't the hitter get out of the way vs wearing ball 4?

No doubt he should have gotten out of the way because of how the rule works.

Here's the rule...

NCAA Rule 7, Section 4 (i):

i. Awarded if the batter is judged to intentionally make a movement to be hit by a pitch, regardless of where the pitch is located; or allows himself to be intentionally hit by a pitch that is not thrown within the boundaries of the batter's box unless it was not possible to avoid being hit.


  • So if you're deemed to have intentionally made a movement to be HBP it's a strike regardless of where the pitch is located.
  • It's a strike if you make no move to get out of the way of a pitch outside the batters box, "unless it was not possible to avoid being hit."
  • If the ball is in the batters box you do not have to try to avoid being hit. But you can't move into the pitch either.

Any team can have a poor game. The Ags crushed Clemson in the '99 Super Regional only to have them return the favor the next. Game 3 on the other hand was one of the most intense do or die games I ever witnessed at Olsen.
