From the NAIA Championship Tournament first round... Cliff's Notes: Indiana Southeast beats Indiana Tech 14-11 after trailing 11-2 with 2 outs in the 9th inning!!

Down 10-0 in the bottom of the 7th the Grenadiers score 1. Tech matches that in the top of 8 to take an 11-1 lead. Southeast scores a single run in the bottom of 8 to make it 11-2. Tech puts up a 0 in top of 9.

Bottom of 9, best two hitters to start the inning.... Out #1 - ground ball to 3rd. Out #2 - fly ball to left. Out #3 - routine ground ball to short - BOOTED!! E6! That is followed by single, single, double, walk, E5, single, walk, walk, single, double, homer. And that, boys and girls, is how you score 12 unearned runs to win a game you were trailing by 9 with 1 out to go.

Oh, and just for fun they had a doubleheader and followed that up with a 4-0 win over the #1 seed Mizzou Baptist later that day.

Gotta say, that's bigger than down 9-0 in the middle of the 1st.

Talk about taking advantage of an error. Regardless of level, that's quite a feat. I'm sure the coach of the losing team was trying to save pitchers for the next game later that day thinking at some point someone would just make the third out. I've wondered sometimes why Schloss has had our best pitchers in with huge leads at the end of games. It would be awful to lose this way, but it's why baseball is awesome.

I'm a firm believer in winning the game you are playing. I've seen countless examples of coaches saving pitching for the next game and not making it to the next game.

Did the 1 run in the bottom of the 7th prevent a run rule? If yes, that was a huge run as well.

I don't know for sure, but this is the NAIA post-season tourney so I assume everyone gets the full 9 innings.

Searched and found the answer, that run in the 7th did extend the game.

Quote:

The tournament champion receives the NSAA's automatic berth to the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round, which will be played on May 13-16 on 10 different sites announced by the NAIA national office Monday. The national tournament's opening round winners move on to the Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series in Lewiston, Idaho on May 24-31.

All games are nine (9) innings with 10-run mercy rule after 7 innings. There will be no 10-run rule in the championship game.

1 run kept it alive in the bottom of the 8th, too, crazy game.

That's the beauty of baseball, no matter the score there is always a chance.

And that is why baseball is the best of all sports.
